Republicans Committed to Renomina tion of Roosevelt-The Dem cratic Situation. A \ashington dispatch to the News and Citrier states that political for t,.ne! are daily won and lost in the senate and house cloak rooms. The lUctu"ations in the political market are as ickle and varying as the ups and downs in the financial stock mar ket Today the republicans will tell you that the election of Roosevelt ir assur ed. and t(omorrow the democrats will tell you that this is a democratic year. and it only remains for the party leaders to concentrate their efforts ,on a conservative presidental candi date to bring about a change in the administration The republicans are committed to the renomination of Roosevelt and the Chicago convention promises to be nothing more than a cut and dried ratification meeting If names and dates were given it would appear that the republican leaders in congress are hostile to another Roosevelt adminis tration. To what extent these nation ai leaders reflect the sentiments of the rank and file can only be ascertained by the decision handed down by the voters at the polls next November. I There is considerable confusion in the democratic household over the se lection of a standard bearer in the coming campaign, but there is hope and encouragement to be derived from the general belief that a wave of democratic ascendency is in sight. Here in Washington the political tide ebbs and flows periodically, and just now the expert forecasters pre dict that "democracy" is perched on the incoming wave. A group of democratic congressrhen were discussing their party's future prospects at the capitol today. There were several weil seasoned successful politicians in the symposium. There were no republican eaves-droppers around. consequently there was a freedom of expression by those pres ent which may reflect some of the in side lights on the political situation from a democratic point of view. Representative Von Livingston, of Georgia,a veteran in state and nationtal politics, thus declared himself: "If we do not take advantage' of our present oppdrtunity we might as well retire from business. The country is ripe for a change in the political com plexion of the government. I have been over to New York. A few days ago I was in Baltimore. I am con vinced that the New York support of Judge Parker-they are confronted by the old contention between the Hill machine up the state and the Tam many organization in New York city. In my judgment the rival factions in New York will not concentrate their honest efforts in behalf of Judge Par ker, and when the appropriate time arrives, I believe New York will de cline to receive instructions from Parke,r and throw its strength to Gorman, who, in my opinion, is the strongest candidate we can nominate. His strength is conceded by the fact that all of the republican n'ewspapers are afraid if him." "How do you account for Senator ,Bacon's letter to the editor of the Augusta Chronicle, in which the sena tor indirectly committed Senator Gor man to the Parker boom?" asked an interested listener. "I am not accountable for Senator Bacon's statements," replied Mr. Liv igston. At this point of the conversation Representative Myer, of Louisiana, one of the veteran members of the house, said: "I agree with you, Mr. Livingston. that Senator Gorman is the ablest and most logical candidate we can put up. Senator Gorman cannot afford to en gage in a scramble for the presidency. His record, his value as a safe and consistent democratic leader. pre cludes him from resorting to undigni fed methods to secure the nomina tion. It is not required of him and. knowing him as I do,- I am gratified Iat the conservative and dignified course he is pursuing. I am in favor of nominating a sotithern man, and Senator Gormian is a good southerner for me. I am convinced that unless we nominate a sound, practical, con servative man, who has the confi dence of the buisine~s interests of the country, we will go to certain defeat."
