SOUTH CAROLINA NEWS.
Items of More or Less Interest Condensed
in the State.
J. M. Riggins, a conductor, was
fatally wounded on Thursday, near
Lockhart, while coupling cars,
causing his death on Friday.
Two little negro children left in
a house near Walterboro, by their
mother, were burned to death on

The mother of the young man

the recent State fair in Columbia,
came from her home in Peoria, Ill.,
to plead with Solicitor Thurmond
not to prosecute the young man,
the owner of the stolen property,
which was recovered, having con
sented that he should not be pros
ecuted. The mother said the first
news she had of her son was after
the Iroqouis theatre, when he
wrote her that he had noticed in
the list of the dead the name of his
sister. Solicitor Thurmond has de
clined to drop the case.
The dispensary board on Satur

and gets at it very early.
If you should fall out of a buggy
and get hurt, matters not what the
cause, advise us not to mention it,
else it might appear in the paper.
The school at Pleasant Grove is
progressing very nicely, with Prof.

From the Union Progress we
learn that Mr. John R. Mathis now
has charge of the Western Union
telegraph office at Union. He is a
good printer and reporter as well as
operator, all which makes a fine
combination.

Sport in Rabbit-Hunting.
Charlotte Observer, 5th.
According to Mr. John R. Pharr,
who owns the finest pack of hounds
in the county, fox hunting is not a
circumstance to hunting the long
eared "molly-cotton-tail." Mr.
Pharr had as his guests on a hunt
yesterday Messrs. Thomas W.
Dixon, J. H. Wearn and E. Carson.
The sport was on Mr. Pharr's farm.
northeast of the city, and every
member of the party thoroughly
enjoyed the musical baying of the
io dogs and the catching of sev
eral rabbits.
Good Point.
Ch.ester Lantern, 5th.
This would be a good time to
drive, but we should rather see the
roads after a wet spell. Editor Aull
says they have good roads down in
Newberry now, but they don't bring
them out in wet weather. We have
fine roads in Chester county too,
barring the hills, but we will not
warrant them against wet weather.
We have a few miles of road now,
however, that we will warrant at
any season and in any kind of
weather.
Recollects The Chapman Gin.
Greenwood News and Views.
Mr. A. M. Chapman, of Saluda
county, recently spent a night in
the city. Mr. Chapman is quite an
old man, a brother of the Newberry
historian, and was returning home
from Winder, Ga., where he had
been to see his son. When he was
a young man he and his brothers
made cotton gins and many of the
older people remember the Chapman
gin u. hich was built by these
brothers.

1903 Seeds
for
1904 Planting.
It is said that seeds have been
found in Egyptian tombs which,
though thousands of years old, still
preserved their vitality. However,
in planting for profit, it is wiser to
demand seeds of a later crop.
Seeds can't be too fresh, which
means that vou must have those
grown last year. There is one
grower you can depend upon to
supply them, this is
BUIST.
You can buy them with confi
