It is reported that Texas fever is
raging throughout the cattle herds
of the Northwest.
Three men were scalded to death
in the basement of a hotel in Detroit
on Friday by the breaking of a
steam pipe.
Four men were crushed to death
by falling in a shaft to the bottom
of a mine near Brownsville, Pa.,
885 feet deep.
July cotton sold at 16 cents a
pound on the New York exchange
on Thursday. A few years bgo the
price ranged between 6 and 8 cents.
Six persons were killed and four
teen were injured by the explosion
of gas in a hotel in Rognonas,
France, ou Friday. The hotel was
partially wrecked.
The owners of two more cotton
- mills in the vicinity of Philadelphia
have been forced to cut down the
time of their working men, number
ing 500, on account of the high
price of cotton.
The house of representatives has
unanimously voted not to accept
mileage for the present session of
Congress, which began immediately
at the close of the preceding session.
Seven girls belonging to a cook
ing school at Darmstadt, in Ger
many, are dead and others are in
serious condition from partaking of
a dish made of canned beans and
meat. The exact nature of the
poision is yet unknown.
Mrs. Annie Chambers Ketchum,
the author of the "Bonnie Blue
Flag" and other famous writings,
died in St. Vincent's hospital, in
New York, on Friday, in her Soth
year. Mrs. Ketchum came of a
long line of distinguished Kentucky
and Virginia ancestors.
Mrs. Kramer, on trial in Kansas
City for the murder of her first
husband three years ago, was found
not guilty/on the ground that she
was insane when she fired the fatal
shot. At a previous trial she was
convicted but a neF trial was se
cured on a technicality. During
the interim between the two trials
she married again.
Secretary Hetser's weekly cotton
statement on Friday showed for 29
days of January a decrease under
last year of x46,ooo bales and a
decrease under the same period year
before last of 231,ooo blaes. For
the 151 days of the season the ag
gregate was ahead of the same
period last year 52,00o, and ahead
of the same days year before last
7,00o.
Congressman W. S. Burleson, of
the Tenth Texas District, went
home from Washington, a distance
of 3,000 miles, for the express pur
pose of paying $r -75 poltax. The
congressman negelected to pay this
tax before leaving home and he
was informed that it could not be
paid by proxy and that he would be
disfranchised as a voter and office
holder if he did not return in person
and pay his poll-tax by January 31.
A train chartered by Charles W.
Clark, on which he made a record
breaking attempt to reach the bed
side of his dying wife, made the trip
from Albuquerque, N M., to Chi
cago, 1.377 miles, in 32 hours and
5 minutes, which is 4 hours and 55
minutes faster than the time of the
Santa Fe's fast "California Lim
ited,'' and 25 minutes faster than
the time of the famous west-bound
Lowe special of last August. Mrs.
Clark bad died before her husband
reached her.
Three negroes in Gwinett county,
Ga., attempting to secure a large'
quantity of money which they had
in his room, climbed to the roof of
the house at night, and let one of
their number down the chimney
with a rope tied around his body.
When the negro reached the bottom,
however, his bare feet touched live
coals and his frantic efforts to es
:ape awakened the owner of the
house and the negro was captured.

escape from the roof of the house.
Mrs. G. J. Shields was criminally
ssaulted and probably murdered at.
her home in Roanoke, Va., on Sat
urday morning. The fiend also in
aicted two ugly wounds upon the
head of her little three-year-old
girl, in order, it is supposed, to pre
vent her screams. When the hus
band came home at the luncheon
hour he found both lying in pools
:f their own blood. There is little
hope for the recovery of either.
About a thousand men organized to
wreak vengeance but the fiend has
:ot been captured.

the Pee Dee farmers are forsaking

Mrs. Carolina Wilkes, of near
Patrick, in Chesterfield county, is

The Baptist church at William
ston waa totally destroyed by fire
at 3.30 o'clock Thursday morning.
r'here was no insurance. The
origin of the fire is a mystery.
Miss Eliza de Choiseul, eldest
aughter of the Marquis Xavier de
Choiseul, of the branch of the family
istinguished in French history,
died in Greenville on Friday. She.
was born in Sicily. Her brother
died fighting for South Carolina in
the war for Southern independence.
The body of a white man was
found in a freight car at Spartan
burg last week. The car had been
shipped full of cotton from Merid.
ian, Miss., and the cotton had
caught fire on the route. The body
was discovered by those checking
up the bales left by the flames. I
A cotton thief locked in the Salu
da jail worked his way through the
side wall of the cell he was in into
an adjoining room which was un
locked and made his escape This
is the second prisoner to escape
rom this jail in the same manner.
