HIS NEW FIELD OF LABOR.
The Rev. D. P. Boyd Well Pleased With
His Work at Fountain Inn, of Which
He Writes Interestingly.

completed my first round on my
work. I will try to interest your
readers for a shcrt while in the
things we have seen and felt. and
heard. We reached the parson-ge
on Wednesday, the 23d December,
and were met by a delegation from
Fountain Inn church, who gave us
a bountiful dinnei, and many other
things which are useful to an itin
erant and his family. Capt. Wm.
Parks turned a fine peafowl into
our hen-house, and said these
Methodists should not get ahead of
him-he being a Baptist. A few
days later a delegation from Green
pond church came with chickens,
preserves, cakes, jellies, a large
home-raised ham and many other
thing,, that are useful; and they say
that Pisgah, Hopewell end Fellow
ship-the other three churches-are
waiting for the supply to be ex
hausted, and then they are ccming
also to do in like manner. Such.
kindness calls forth the best efforts
in a man.
I am much pleased with the out
look-only one objection: I have to
fill three appointments on the sec
ond Sunday. The people seem to1
be willing to submit as gracefully
as possible to the change of preach
ers. We have'six accecsions to date.
I mean to look after my part of the
flocks around here., I went last night
to visit a family whom I married
about eighteen years ago and to
whom was given a sweet little girl.
I baptized her about sixteen years
ago and received her into the church
last night at the home of her pa
rents. I was delighted t-> do this
for her.
We have over five hundred and
twenty-five members on this work.
I am going to do my utmost to meet
the demands upon me both in the
pulpit and in my pastoral work.
We have three churches-Bap
tist, Presbyterian, and Methodist.
We have a graded school, whose
principal is Prof. Dominick, a New
berry boy, a son of my life long
friends John Dominick and. Mrs.
Nannie Dominick. I love him for
his parents' sake as well as for his
own. He has an enrolment of near
ly 200 pupils and has four assistants.
The people of this section are well
to-do. It is not unusual to see from
five to twenty bales of cotton lying
around almost every ginhouse or
barnyard. They don't need the
money. Newberry quotes better
prices than Fountain Inn.
The good roads here are a mar
vel to one who has been used to the
mud.holes and rough hills in my
own county. They are graded and
thrown up- in the middle.' I thn
it would pay any supervisor to make
a trip through this part of Green
ville county and tak~e lessons. Why,
sir, you can trot a horse to death
and not know it. This morning I
went to my appointments-the fur
thest about 11 miles-and "Lady''
hardly stopped trotting oany part
of the road. It iswo 1'u. Speigle
of Greenville is our supervisor, and
he certainly knows how to have
roads worked.
I think we will continue to like
this work, as everybody is so kind'
to us. I trust I shall be permitted
to look in on you occasionally. I
have begun to -nake people happy,
and shall continue so to do when
they ask me to join them in the
bonds of wedlock. I often think of
the many friends we left down there,
and shall ever hold them in the
highest esteem for their unstinted
kindness to us.
The semi-weekly visits of both
county papers are hailed with de
light. They are letters from home.:

SECESSION CONVENTION.
State at Last Secures a Copy of Proceed-;
ings Through Mr. Woods.
For several years the State has
been endeavoring to secure a copy
of the secession convention, it being
discovered some time ago that the
State Eid not have a single copy in
the library. Saturday the secrptary
of s'ate received a letter from W.
D. Woods, of Darlington, stating
that he had a copy, which he would
takea pleasure in presenting to the
State. It is needless to say that
Mr. Gantt and the other officials
are grateful to Mr. Woods for his
generosity.
WOULD TAKE TARIFF OFF COAL.
Two Bills for That Purpose Introduced by
Mr. Williams.
Washirgton, Jan. 10 - Represen
tati-e Williams. of M ippi. in
trn4!:ced a bill yesterday provid
ing:
"That from and after the passage
of this act no duty shall be levied
or collected upon coal in any form
or description imported into the
United States from foreign coun
tries."
Also a bill requiring the Secre
tary of the Treasury to make full
rebate of duties paid on all coal of
every description imported into the
United States from foreign countries
for the period of one year.
Mrs. Maybrick Releascd This Year.
London, Jan. i r.-Referring to
the statement published in the
United States that final arrange
mets' were made Saturday at a
conference between Ambassador
Choate and the home office officials
for the release in April of Mrs.
Florence Maybrick, the American
woman under sentence of life impris
onment on the charge of poisoning
her husband, it is pointed out that
the status of the case is just as ca
bled to the Associated Press on
March 23, 1803, when it was a:
nounced on the authority ot tha
home office that she would be re
leased in 1904. The exact date of
her release is not fixed.
Baroness de Roques says that her
daughter, Mrs. Maybrick, is decid
edly in better health and gaining
strength, now that she has the cer
tainty of being released.
'All sensational newspaper ac
counts relative to our business in
terests and future fortune," added
the baroness, '"have not resulted in
profit to us. Quite the cotu~rary."

Northern Virginia department.

Veterans, until now, our comrades
have indissolubly associated with
its splendid career the magnificent
character, large heart and magnetic
oratory of the knightly Gordon.
He was not only our devoted com
rade, he was not only the b:illi:at
orator who so magnificently pre
sided over our rcunons, 1e wa
not only our commander-i-Ch.iel
but o .r own Gen. Gordon-a titl
and a name which to the Confed
erate veteran meant only one man
and one glorious union of high
characteristics which made him the
superb man and leader. There
never has been in our hearts but
one Gen. John B. Gordon, and
vainly will any one aspire*o fill the
place in our affections ever held by
him.
Your department commander
feels that it would be vain to at
tempt to portray the splendid char
acter of the departed hero, to
sketch the deeds of his life, to tell
of his brilliant career on the battle
field or tc portray the deep love
he felt for each and every Confed -
erate comrade, and for all the glo
rious memories of the Confederacy.
The Confederate veteran does not
live who does not know this. His
life has been spent for his country,
and in the full blaze of publicity
and every action shows the great
heart and cultured mind no-.v
stilled by the hand of death.
Only the supreme loss to the
United Confederate veterans need
be announced to his heartbroken
comrades: Our Gen. John B. Gor
don is dead.

customary badges of mourning until
after the next general reunion of
