$26,250 N DVIDElDS.
To Be Paid Today By the Corporations
of the City.
There will be paid in dividends
today $26,250 and most of it will
go to our own people as they are
largely the stockholders in the local
enterprises.
The Newberry Cotton Mill will
pay a 5 per ceut semi-annual divi
dend on a capital stock of $4oo,ooo,
amounting to $z6,ooo.
The National Bank will pay a
semi-annual dividend on the capi
tal stock of $igo, ooo, amounting to
$6,ooo.
The Newberry Savings Bank
will pay a semi-annual dividend of
3J per cent on the capital stock of
$5o,ooo, amounting to $1,750
The Commercial Bank will pay
a semi-annual dividend of 3 per
cent on its capital stock of $50,000,
amounting to $1,730.
The Bank of Prosperity will pay
a semi-annual dividend of 3 per
cent on its capital stock of $25,ooo,
amounting to $750.
The People's National Bank of
Prosperity, but recently organized,
will not declare a dividend at this
time, but the business of the bank
as been entirely satisfactory and
even better than the promoters an
-ticipated.
The Mollohon Manufacturing
company would have declared a
dividend but for the fact that the
.pacity of the mill has just been
doubled, and that is an assurances
of success even greater than a divi
dend, to be able so soon after the
enterprise was launched to double
the capacity.
Newberry needs some more divi
dead declaring institutions which
at the same time give employment
-to people,

Attorney-No Other Changes.
At a meeting of city council on
Wednesday night the election for
city officers was held. The coun
ciI was in session for quite awhile.
The only changes so far are in the
office of chief of police and city
attorney.
There were only two applicants
for the position of chief of police,
Mr. C. W. Bishop- and Mr. W. H.
Harris, the incumbent. Mr. Bishop
was elected. He has served as
chief before and as polieceman, and
for the past year be has been the
health officer.
Mr. W. H. Harris has served
only one year as chief of police and
it is but true to say be has made a
very efficient and most acceptable
officer, having discharged his duties
without fear or favor. and goes out
of office with the good will of the
council, the policemen and the citi
zens generally.
Mr. T. 0. Stewart was re-elected
clerk and treasurer without opposi
tion, a deserved compliment to a
very efficient officer.
Messrs. H. H. Franklin, S. G.
Carter and W. P. Bedenbaugh were
re-elected policemen. For the fourth
policeman there was a tie vote be
tween Mr. B. E. Koon and Mr.
Brooks Hutchinson and therefore
no election. The council will meet
again on next Wednesday night to
lect the fourth policeman.
Cole L. Blease, Esq., was elected
:ity attorney.
Rial Bates, lamplighter and jani
tor.
Barney Whitener, hose wagon

First Cost Not the Cheapst.
The first cost of- an artdle' does not'
necessarily determine its' cheapness.- -
For instance, a sack of "Cifton" flour.
may cost you a little more than other
so-called patent flours, but it will be
cheaper to you in the end. Why? Bet
cause :twill not only make more bread
to the, sack:, but will take less lard and
soda to make it. Order a sack of "Clif
ton" and make a test for yourself. It
will prove the truth of this statement
T. J. HAYs.
Do you want one of the prettiest and
most stylish Hats in town this season?
If so you must have it made by the
TheRier Iillliery Co
Our prices are the lowest and our
styles the newest that can be found in
the city.
Get the Best For the Asking.
When you order a sack of patent flour
from your grocer, do not tell him to
send you "a sack of good flour", but
tell him to send you a sack of "Clifton,"
because "Clifton" is the best patent.
Every sack is sold with-this guarantee.
and if it does not prove as represented,
your money will be refunded. "Clifton"
is an all-round flour, and is as good for
cake and pastry as light rolls and bis
cuit. T. J. HAYs.
