his scare was over found he had
choked it to death." I heard of
mnany jokes on the scare, but they
have escaped my memory. None
knew how the rumor originated.
kOne of my good and trite friends
lying in winter quarters at Orange
Court House, Va., found an old
book, "Outline History, of Vir
ginia". It gave an account-of the
Ned Turner, negro, insurrection in
1833. A negro preacher, Ned, ser
vant of an old widow who indulged
him and gave hitu a horse to ride
to his preaching, with fifty others
secretly started out killing the
whites, women and children, and
among others his mistress. They
were routed and three of them exe
cuted. Ned escaped, but a hunter
afterwards hearing his dogs baying
found Ned and lie too was executed.
About this titue tobacco peddlers
from Virginia were common in
Newberry, 'atd it may be that
the story started froi their re
lating the Ned Turner raid and
locatiig it in Newbrrv.
