OUR COTTON MARKET ON A BOOM.
The Newberry Herald and News
has the following to say about New
berry as a cotton market:
"AsThe Herald and News has 1
heretofore remarked, Newberry has I
been one of the best cotton mar
kets in the State this season. Onl
Saturday we had wagons in New
berry with cotton from within three t
miles of Laurens, and nlear Clinton r
and Cross Hill. Men sold cotton
here who did not even know where
the banks were, beca."se they had
never been here before with cotton.
The merchants will reap the benefit :
of this together with the farmer,
for every man who sells cotton will
spend some money in the same town
in which lie sells." i
Wlhat is true ot Newherry is.trie
of every other place or cottuin mar- C
ket; that is, that where a manl sells i
his cottonl that is the Ilace where
lie is most likely to ly his neces
sities. BiLt there was 110 1)eItd of
Iamttrens )mimttv cottot1 goiitl, to
Newberry last SatIrldav, as oir cit \
pas pinig as ntetch for cotton t
Newberr y. lit fact, our market b
has )eeit looking up for the past
three weeks and, as ettupated with
Ihe (iotations fromn any oier muar
ket in the State, Laurens has, for
the past week, paid the very high- a
est price for cotton, atid there is no tj
need now for the Laurens farmer
to take his cotton to Newberry or
anywhere else.-arensville lier
ald. i
-- i
Greenwood has been paying as SC
much for cotton as Atlanta, at least
she did last M\onday, and we
haven't heard of any, other town in a I
South Carolina paying as much.--- ot
Laurens Advertiser.
Close comparison shows that tr
Greenwoo(d is always ahead of other
towns in this as weil as other
things.-Greenwood Index. (I
We do not know, why it is, but w
the fact remains that Newberry'sc
cotton market all the season has CC
brought cotton from many miles c
arond, even within a few miles of li
Laurens and close to Greenwood. sc
In fact cotton has been bought by sc
the mills here in other towns atnd b(
shipped for less motieV than it could er
he bought on the square from the cc
wagons. We have often had occa- V
sion1 to ct.iplain of the Newberrv h
cotton market, but this year it has et
bken at the top all the while. We ti
do not claim that Newbeiry is al- T
ways ahead inl everything, but our I
claim is has--ed ipon facts in the cot- tl
toi market. The Icrald Id News p
delights ini the p)rosperity of all of
its neighbors anid we arc glad to see
lie smaller towts like L.-o rents and elC
G reeniwood mtoving ahiead and keep ti
ing iul w~ith the procesion. t c
AS TO CONSISTEiNCY. I
WVhat weC wrote ini regard1 to the i

We did .not criticize anybody notr i

'T. J . WX. 's criticism of the financcs

was ineverthieless, ini that lie sitted
the people did not object to theex

could see where it wenit, leaving the
conclusiotn to be dIrawni that a $2,

\\' arc stirp risd at thle st ate ment
of our corresponident that the steel
bridge, lenvi-wg out a 'few muer
::hants" does not benefit the tax
payers of the county. That is a
aarrow view to take of any public
itility. Apart from the fact that
:hese "few merchants" pay a con
;iderable portion of the tax of the
:ounty and are entitled to some
:onsideration, the broader view is
hat whatever helps any considera
>le portion of the people ot any
:ommun:ty is of benefit to the en
ire community. just as well say
hat we should not build a bridge
cross Enoree river lecause it would
enefit only a "few" people who
ive in that section and have occa
ion to cross that river. \Ve sup
ose t hat there are numerous bridges
a the county that will niever he of
ny direct benefit to T. J. W. be
ause he may never have occasion
: cross thei, and so far as he is
oneertied they had just as well not
ave been blilt. Then thee m.V

ut there are other people, besides
"few merchants" who are glad
iis steel bridge has been built
7e may never cross this bridge and
ive no interest in any mercantile
isiness and yet we are glad the
-idge was built and had hoped to
e another one built during this
-ar for we want to make it as eas%
id as convenient as possible for
ir friends in Saluda to bring their
Oduce to our markets and do their
adinlg with our merchants We
!ed to take broad views of such
lestiois.
As to sewerage in the court house
e have nothing further to say ex
pt that our position is entirely
1nsistent. We did want a new
)urt house, and do now, and would
ke to see it takon out of the public
luare, and that is one reason why
much money should not have
,en spent on sewerage. The sew
age in the jury r oims would have
>st but little and it is a great con
:I)ienice to the jurors, and should
ive been put there even if a new
urthouse is built. Sewerage at
e jail was a sanitary necessity.
he grand jury insisted that sew
-age should be puit in. And cer
inly ill so lrge a contract coi
t itive bids should have been re
ived.
