Germany having indulged in a high protective tariff is now suffering from high prices like the United States. Democrats and Insurgents. Democrats should be "wise as ser pents' and harmless as doves," as the t?-od book teaches them, in their dealings with the Insurgents. Tnis is the more necessary because the In surgents are constantly declariug ;hat they believe in the policy of pro Lection, and that is not Democratic. Krai tariff reform and protection d> nnt go hand in hand. These Insur ants are also making their fight :or supremacy in their o^n party, ,-iud if they win they will still be the opponents of the Democrats. There ?rp Insurgents and near-Insurgents and the latter, it will he remembered, constantly vcted with the Repub lican machine and for measures thut toe Democrats and the real Insur ants felt compelled to oppose. In the presidential election the Indepen dents can be depended upon to vote foi Republican candidate for pres ident, it aiakes no difference who he may be or for what he may stand tor. In the strong Republican states ?'?lere is, of course, a strong incen tive for Democrats to join with the Tusurgents to beat the regular Re publicans, who follow the fo. tunes of Cannon and Aldrich. But if the Republican factions are about equal ly divided there must be a first-rate Chence to elect an honest and capa 5.1? Democrat, who will oppose pro tectionism, frenzied financialism, ex trt.vagence in public expenditures and all the other isms and ills that go to make up modern Republican Ism. ? ? ?<? Waiting on the Farmers. What is the matter with the Re uulican prosperity? In Wall Street it has turned into mighty near a panic. The iron and steel business wrich is looked upon a.s the barome ter of trade, is in the dumps. The ectton and other texlie mills are on *.y working on half time. And so on. Everything is wa'ting on the far mer. If the crops average well, busi ness will revive but the yield of wheat is poor in spots and there will .be* less than an average. Ap : arently the cotton crop will fall be ?ow the average. All eyes are turn ed on the corn crop which, although the drouth has injured it in the Southwest, may be a fair average. In any event, "the best Republican tariff bill ever enacted" does not aem to be doing its full duty of producing prosperity, and this will compel the Republican spellbinders, during the next few weeks, to re vise their old speeches, that the Re publican party is the prosperity pro ducer, and explain what is the mat '.or with Taft, Teddy and the tariff. The insurgent Republicans can Mame it on Cannon and Aldrich and s.U11 declare that the new tariff is as bad as they claimed it to be, and the farmers will do the rest?that is, i,ive us a Defocratic victory. Trade Dispute Riots. It is deplorable that so much i"l .eeling and rioting have tnar^ec re cent trade disputes. Howev?r great provocation may be, or seem to be, ? iolene is unjustifiable and h' the long run invariably defeats its pur pose. Surely when disputes arise be r?een great business corporations and their employees some better vaj of deciding the contest tha-J i?y s. vikes and lock outs, with the - con sequent evils, ought to be found, io Vie average man it would seem that ?;iider pres^.u ethnic conditions both parties in a dispute ought to be wi'i ing to arbitrate their differences and to abide by the decision rendered. Of course, under such an arrang : .v.ent, it is seldom that each side gets all that it wants, but better compro mise, whei uc principle is involved, *han bitter estrangement and mutual jealousies. As a matter of fact near ly all progress in liberty, civil and religious in the relation between cap ital and labor and in almost every realm has been gained through a series of compromises. There Are Good Ones. Eternal vigilance seems to be nec essary to preserve the boy from trie (ortaniinating influence of vicious Inerature and the no less vicious moving picture films. The injurious eflect of these things is constantly ?een.
