COTTON OUTLOOK
THERE IS NO LONGER DOUBT
OF A VERY SHORT CROP.
All Efforts to Break Prices of
the Staple bo Far Has Completely
Failed.
The census report on cotton pub
lished Friday gives 9,362,222 ginn
ed to December 13. This Is 67.
000 less than the National Ginnere
and fully confirms the small bureau
crop estimate. During the period,
of December 1 to 13 this year 486,
000 bales were ginned against 894,
000 last year and 941,000 in 1907.
GJnnings last year to December
13 were 11,900.565. Therefore,
actual ginnings already show a de
ficit of 2,538,000, compared with
last year, enough to justify present
and higher prices for this crop. The
11,900,565 ginned last year to De
cember 13 were 90.9 per ee:it of.
the total crop.
The bullish meaning of this cen
sus report was fully reeognized In
New York and the market gained
5 to 8 points around the opening,
but for the reason repeatedly stated
that we are nearing two periods of
holidays, there Is not sufficient back
ing to push the advantage. On all
firm periods in the market there is
realizing, which accounts for the
the tame markets we are having.
?However, the bull position, based
on the strongest of all arguments a
very short crop, Is being constantly
fortified by statrstfcal data, the re
liability of which cannot be ques
tioned. Definite results are merely
j delayed until "the return of activity
in the. markets after the New Year
holidays, when the market will be
come very active and prices are apt
to advance.
! The New York Dry Goods Review
speaks of good business with the
retail trade and the prompt delivery
is being asked on goods bought for
; delivery in a month. The very se
vere winter "weather all over th*
country has also created an addi
tional absorbing power for goods.
A decided advance in all cotton
goods will undoubtedly be the re
sult of the continued high price of
cotton.
The Holy Night.
In the hush of the solemn midnight.
As out of the purple skies
The golden host of stars look down
With inyraid shining eyes,
Their ordered aplenuor seems to
, breathe
Of a yet more glorious sight,
When the rauiant Star of Bethle
hem
i Shane an the Holy. Night.
And the silent world seems listening.
As if to catch again
Some echo of tue wondrous hymn.
The rapt, triumphant strain,
That on tne blest Judean nignt
Burst from the opening sky?
Proclaiming peace'on earth to men;
Glory to God most high!
Oh, to have watched 'with the shep
herds,
And heard that matchless song!
Oh, to have seen wkh raptured eyes
The bright anaelic throng!
Oh, to have hearkened the tidings
With waich tue heavens still ring,
Anu been iho first to be bidden
Unto the court of the King!
Ah, happy, blessed s'Jipherds,
Tell us, what found ye there??
A Child who lay iu a manger,
A Mother who knelt in prayer:
The breatn of the beasts to waian
Him,
The straw for his lowly bed,
Wbiie the i.ings of ange?s filled the
sky,
And the great Star burned
o'erhead.
Oh, to have knelt with the shepherds.
To worship and adore
The Lord who came as an infant.
Humble and weak and poor!
To have brought to HIb fett ia
off'ring
The fairest lamb of the fold?
Earlier gift than the Mafi's
Incense and myrrh and gold!
Hush! we may still with the shep
herds
Go unto Bethlehem,
Still hearken tne wonderful tidings
Brought by the angels to them.
Still kneel in the lowly stable,
With the Mother undtfiled,
And offer our love and homage
At the Crib of the Holy Child.
We may open our hearts to Hi3'
comin'j,
Bidding Him enter and reign,
Teaching ovr souls the deep meaning
Of poverty, hardship and pain:
So may we share in the blessing.
So catch a gleam of the light
That poured from the Star and the
Manger
In the peace of the Ho!y Night.
