SOCIETY OF GOOD CHEER YOUNG LADIES FORM ASSOCIA TION TO VISIT SIOK. The Work is Now Beginning in New York, but Will Very Likely Extend Over the Country. The Society of Good Cheer has been chartered under the State laws of New York, says a message from New York city, by a group of young women of the upper West side of New York City. These earnest workers aim to cheer the sick and especially the convalescent, to give a touch of joy to those lives that have been brought low t.irough sick ness, to rind th(^ "strauger- within the gates" that may be very much in need of cheer, anu to promulgate cheerfulness among all classes of people. For sometime these young ladies have -made it a' par.t of their every day lifo to visit boarding houses, ho tel^, hospitals and privat? residenc es where the sick are convalcscim; ?ud by distributing flowers, books, magazines and good cheer, have assisted many people back to rug ged health and rea. life. Miss Theora .Carter; the leading spirit among these young ladies, conceived the iuea of organizing a Society of Good Cheer to be com peted of young ladies who would dftvoto a portion of their time to helpfulness and cheer. Miss Carter became sick while at tending the Post Graduate classes im Chicago aud mapped out the work while convalescing. She is now devoting her ample income and time tci the society and has inspired such a spirit ol cheer among her young associates in New York that many have joined in the work. Miss Carter is the President of the society and she and her co workers are successlully creating an V>rganizatiou 'that Will soon be a potent factor in our national life. Many lodges have been formed and others are ready for organiza tion. It is proposed to institute lodg es in all the centers of the country to work with physicians in aiding and assisting the convalescent and to bring' before the entire people the nccfc?si'y of good cheer at all times. ? Already tho famous Hampton Court estate of Staten Island, with its eighty acres of fine lawns and parks, has been thrown open to the members of the society in their work. ' \.' .' A tented city in New Alexico has been planned for incipient consninp tives and a number of New York's wealthy men will give over their yachts .in the rumn.et./or . several days in order that excursions 4nay be taken along the Hu-Jsen. ? Tb.e society is distributing hang ers and cards among business hous es with the words, "Cheerfulness is an asset/' The pr.troas of the society include some of the leading women of the land. . This society is not a charity. These who join must give a por tion of their time ami,,where that is impossible, they are expected to give way to others who are ready to do work in perron. One ci the aims of the society is to cn-oi-rage men to cheer up their friends and acquaintances when siok an.I convalescing. Many men have an i'Jea that whoa they are sick it is best to be left aie.ne, "a kind of independence that does n^t always work out well with the oth^r man. One of the strict rules of the so ciety is that /oung ladies In visit ing must go in pairs or groups and must study sanitation and hygienic rules.
