VALUE FROM WASTE. How Modern Science Adds to the World's Wealth. Perfumes are not always what they seem. Scents and other useful odors are generally supposed to be obtained from flowers. The oils coming from waste fruit, such as decayed pears, grapes and peaches, however, can bo substituted for some of the costliest floral fragrance after they have been treated with acids aud other liquids, which impart to them a remarkable perfume. Not only perfumer, but soaps, even confectionery, are now Manufactured which are flavored with what is called the oil of bitter almonds. . but which Is extracted from the tar which Is a refuse of gasmaking plant* auch as are to be fouud iu every large city. iu the textile Industry the making of value out of waste has been truly remarkable. In the modern woolen factory no fewer than five products are obtained by methods now in vogue from the greasy excretions which, aft er circulating through the animal's ays tem, attach to the wool of a sheep. These products are used as a base for ointments and toilet preparations, for dressings for leather, as a lubricant for wool and other animal filters and ki conjunction with certain lubricating ?Ha. At one large lubricating plant more than 200,000 pounds of wool are "degreased" every ten hours. From $2,000,000 to 53,000.000 worth of wool fat and potash are estimated to have been wasted during a year In the Unit ed States before the solvent process of extraction came Into general use.?Chi; cago Tribune. HAND POWER ICE MACHINE. Easily Operated Device For the Manu facture of Ice at Hems. The device for making Ice In the home, herewith illustrated, acts upon the well known principle that water will freeze when rapidly evaporated by means of a vacuum pump and a pow erful absorbent, says Popular Mechan ics. This apparatus will ice a carafe, or bottle of water, in three minutes and In twenty minutes will produce a one pound block of Ice and with no more trouble than the labor involved in freezing a quart of ice cream. The expense connected with the manufacture of ice by this menus is very moderate after the Initial cost of the machine Is reckoned upon. The machine sells for something less than $T>0 After this the only expense for the operation of the plant is Hie local cost of sulphuric acid, which acts as the necessary ?l>sorbent. Gasoline For Engines. A very simple icsi can be made to ?how the volatility of gasoline by moisten ing the hand with the liquid and noting the time it takes to evap orate. Problem of Perfect Coal Combustion Remains to Be Solved. The direct cause of smoke is tbe fact that the gases distilled from the coal are not completely burned in the fur nace before coming in contact with the surface of the shell or tubes, which ? hills them below the Ignition tempera ture. Now, these gases are the vola tile hydrocarbons, which all bitumi nous coals contain to a greater or less extent and whi h are driven off when the coal is heated. The pereentnge of this volatile matter varies all the way from per cent for the eastern anthra cites tu as high as 00 per cent for tbe western lignites. The larger the per centage of volatile matter the greater the liability to smoke production, other things being equal, ai d the more diffi cult Is smoke prevention. The be havior of these volatile gases during combustion Is complex. There are good reasons for supposing that a hy drocarbon at a sufficiently high tem perature is decomposed into its ele ments. The carbon particles are seem ingly averse to combining with oxy gen, exeept under favorable eomiitions. If the teni[>eruture is too low or the air supply insufficient the carbon re fuses to combine and appears later as soot or smoke. We must b'??ve suffi cient air at-a high temperature. The whole question revolves about the point of perfect combustion. We have successfully solved these problems for oil. We started witli smoky torches, as the air could not get at tbe body of oil in the center of the wick. We tbeu used a Out wick?that Is, we gave the oil more surface for tbe air to act on. We then used a hol low cylindrical wick, air acting on both sides. ? The final stet? was the center eore or argand lamp, which first healed the air for the wlek supply. Put when we try to force the lump by turning up the wlek and thereby In crease the oil <-ousutnpUon we gee Into trouble immediately by producing smoke. We have exactly these same conditions to meet in the- combustion of solid fuel. In other words, if coal Is to be burned with maximum econ omy and? without smoke It must be supplied with tbe correct amount of air at the proper temperature.?-Harold V. Goes in Engineering Magazine. The saw Is made of vanadium steel, and If Is due to this fact and the skillful tempering that it can be used to the poiut of abuse with out injury. A new lamp for use in mines has recently been invented. The lamp Is placed within a large glass globe, which is air tight. Between the lump and the globe pure air Is inclosed, and when the lamp Ik lighted the air Is expanded by the heat. The Mexican Academy of Medicine has appropriated .*2T>.000 for the pur pose of discovering the cause of ty phus and to develop n cure for the fe ver. In the event of any one person solving both problems an effort will be made to have the government give a proper reward. Apparatus Automatically Delivers Packages From a Moving Train. A simple apparatus for delivering mall bags or similar packages from a moving train Is shown in the accom pnoying engraving. The arrangement is such as to deliver the article with out a violent shock or blow. A hous ing Is placed adjacent to the track to receive the bag, and the apparatus acts automatically to throw the bag Into the housing while the train is passing. The lever is held in normal vertical posi tion by a spring, but when it strikes the operating rail, which is curved away from the adjacent track rail. It is swung on the fulcrum, throwing the holder through an opening in the side of the car to the position indicated by dotted lines in the eugravlog. This serves to pitch the contents of the holder Into the housing. The mall bag slides along a Slldcway in the housing and drops into a compartment at the end.
