People of Cotton Belt Urged To
Hold .Cotton.
BY FARMER'S UNION
New Orleans Convention Adjourns
After Making Urgent Plea That
Business People of the South Aid
in the Movement for Better Prices
for the South's Greatest Crop.
New Orleans, La., Nov. 13.?With
a stiring appeal to every interest la
a stirring appeal to every interest in
the South?agricultural, financial
holding cotton for higher prices,
the joint conference committee of
the National Farmers' Union and
financial interests of New Orleans,
adjourned today. The appeal is ad
dressed to the people of the cotton
belt and is as follows:
"We, the joint committee of the
National Farmers' Union and of the
financial and commercial interests cf
New Orleans, realizing .that confi
dence in cotton market conditions
has been impaired, and the appre
hension thereby engendered he.s
caused more rapid marketing of cot
ton than has ever been known, and
beliieving that the holding of cotton
at the present time will permit the
healthy assimilation of temporary
superabundance and restore normal
conditious under which remunera
tive prices may be obtained, hereby
earnestly appeal to every farmer,
merchant and banker and other hold
ers and owners of cotton, to hold
back, so far as they can, their preseiu
holdings and not sell unless abso
lutely compelled to do so, until the
price of cotton shall have reached
a substantially increased figure.
"We especially request all mer
chants and bankers of the cotton
belt to extend the obligation of the
cotton grower, when called upon to
do so, for a reasonable period, and
to do all other things in their power
to aid and encourage such growers
and holders of cotton, believing, as
we do. that, all the business con
ditions of the world, and especially
of the cotton world, steadily point
toward better prices than now obtain
ed.
"We believe that such concerted
and determined action will logically,
and in all probability, increase the
present inadequate price paid for
cotton."
Committees were named to in
vestigate the public ware house plan,
which calls for a quasi public com
mission, appointed by the State of
Louisiana, to control the operation
of a large ware house to be built on
the river front at New Orleans. The
proposed ware house is designed to
hold from 1,500,000 to 3,000,000
bales of cotton.
FINDS HUSBAND IN ASYLUM."
A Man "Who Disappeared Ten Years
Ago, Discovered.
New York, Nov. 13.?Prof Mark
W. Harrington, former chief of the
United States weather bureau, who
mysteriously dropped out of sight
nearly ten years ago, has been found,
a hopeless mental wreck, in the New
Jersey Asylum for the Insane at Mor
ris Plains. He has been an inmate
of the asylum since more than a year
ago when he was found wandering
aimlessly about the streets of Tren
ton. Such is his condition that hr
has been unabl-e to tell the asylum
officials anything about himself, and
it was not until yesterday that his
identity was established. Then the
wife of the former weather bureau
chief visited the asylum and identi
fied the man as her missing husband.
Mrs. Harrington, who lives in this
city, said today that although her
husband has changed greatly in ap
pearance since he left home ten year?
ago, and did not recognize her when
she visited him at the asylum, she
is certain the man in the asylum is
Prof. Harrington. "

GRIEVES OVER TRAGEDY.
Policeman Who Shot Child by A<
cident Quits the Force.
Charleston, Nov. 13.?The Even
ing Post says, grieving over the
shooting of the little girl of a fellow
policeman, Private S. M. McClure, of
the Charleston police force, has re
signed from the department, be
cause of shattered health, and will
start with his family tomorrow for
the West. He will go on to Arizona,
where hie has a brother, leaving his
wife and children with his father in
Tennessee.
Private McClure has always been
a good officer, and was held in high
esteem by his superiors. Last July
ne was In pursuit of a negro in the
upper part of the city, and was
forced to shoot at the fellow. Little
Mary Sassett was hit and killed by
one of the bullets from the offioer'.?
pistol.
A father himself of small children,
Policeman McClure was almost pros
trated with grief, and never reco\
ercd from the shock which the de
plorable death of the little girl gave
him. He seemed to pine away, and
is now forced to use crutches to
make his way about. He leaves to
morrow morning for Arizona, where
it is hoped his strength will return ?
A Resting Place.
The country's always somewhere
Howe'er the city grinds,
Cool, grassy fields are waiting
Howe'er the dust cloud blinds,
The oaks we knew aforetime
Are each one in their place,
And butterflies drift past them
And cool cloud shadows race.
Howe'er work mars the pattern
Of things we planned to do.
Howe'er dreams of our dreaming
Lag in the coming true.
The country waits off yonder
With halm for work-worn hearts.
Vistas of blowing blossoms
To soothe the eye that smarts.
Howe'er the world misuse us,
Howe'er the years shall pile
Their burdens on cur shoulders,
Out yonder all the while
The country waits to greet us
With things we used to know,
The blossom-sprinkled uplands,
Tree branches bending low.
Life can not be all futile,
We scarcely dare to fail
When somewhere 'way out yonder
The calling of the quail
Rings clear across the morning,
And while the distant wood
Waits with its shadows for us
The world is always good.
And there are laughs of children
To meet us down the way,
And the gold of the sunset
Wipes all the dun and gray
Out of the world before us,
And, howe'er we shall fare,
Whate'er our climbs or stumbles
Tho country's always there.
