No Fences Required?Wheeled Vehi cle Never Upon It. Within sight of the town of Jas per, Mo., in the Ozarks, a settler has h farm which probably is unlike any ?ther in the world. Tbbj farm occupies the table land on the summit of a ridge and is en closed with a fence which no animal has ever broken through. It does not -rise-abor* the surfat^?f~tn*>f$rin7 but falls sheer from tbe edge ]T dis tance of many feet. The man who . bomesteaded the tableland bad a hard climb up the.perpendicular cliff to reach the comparatively level Bum Btt At one point a ledge extends out a few inches and along the face of the cliff at an upward grade. By fol lowing this ledge and making use of ?ccasfonal points of rocks and of *hrubs growing in the Assures the ?tibCO' t'rer pulled himself to tbe sum tr.lt and found a surface well covered with soli and a luxuriant vegetation. Gradually he improved the ledge ?intll he' could carry up tools' and <ieed. By blasting and drilling he cleared a narrow trail up which he was able to take first some pigs and then i cow. Later on he took up a aorse. And that to-day is the condition of the curiously protected farm. No vehicle has turned a wheel within ?ts limits of palisades. The live '.tocl; has multiplied and consumes the grain raised. Some stones throwa acrosB the trail completely rence tn the bogs and cattle. When the farmer has stock to tell he drives 'he animals down the private trail nhd strikes the road to Jasper.? \ansas City Star. I Books Returned After Years. Fortunately for the borrower, no lines were exacted and after she had .;one ?.ne question as to whether the ?vornan had not established a record, ?vas asked. "No. indeed." said the librarian. The age tong hatred of th? white ?ace ior ibe black, yellow and other colored races is by no means one sided. It is fully mutual. In the Philippines as in its other land deals, the United States made a good bargain. The census of the Philippines just published shows that the forests In the islands, in which there are 747 varieties of woods, are worth about $3,000,000, ,0$O. or double those of.the States of Oregon and Washington, which are especially strong in that particular ai?3ct. Then there are great depos its of coal, iron and lead, and there are many indications of gold and sil ver, all of which represent a wealth of several billions more. The Phil ippines coat us $20,000,000 in the lump sum which we paid to Spain. Posuibly the military and naval ex penditures oa account of the Islands cost us $400,000,000 or $500,006, 000. But even if these figures were quadrupled we would still be gainers in that speculation in a monetary sense. The Louisiana region, extending from the Mississippi to the Rocky mountains and the Sabine river, cost us $15,000,000, which we paid to France. We gave $5,000,000 to Spain for Florida, which comprised not only the present state of that name, but the lower ends of Ala bama and Mississippi and most of the eastern projection of Louisiana. Texas came to us without cost, and so did the Oregon country, compris ing the present States of Oregon, Washington and Idaho, and parts of Montana and Wyoming. Through conquest and the payment of $18, 250,000 to Mexico we obtained the present States of California, Nevada, Utah, the Territory of Arizona?ex cept bolfiw the Glla river?and parts of New Mexico, Colorado and Wyo ming. For the region south of the Gtta we paid $10,000,000 to Mexico. For Alaska we paid $7,200,000 to rtuEKia. The gold alone which we got from Alaska in 1904, not count ing the coal, fish, fur, blubber or^th er things, amounted to over $10,000 000. In its products Alaska has paid for itself thirty-five times over since we bought it. The Eyeball ami Vision. Dr. Alexander Schaefer has been investigating the vision of many ani mal species and has found that *he eie of the eyeball is the principal factor of tbe acuteness of vision. The bovine species has the sharpest sight. The second place is occupied by man and the horre. which have nearly equal visual powers; the third by the sheep. Small, and especially small eyed, animals, whether mammals, birds, amphibia or reptiles, have Very^'pd^?%i^f. ^"OwhJ'^ithe Wrtfy birds that possess great acutenesp of vision. It has long been known that dogs have sueh indistinct vision that as a rule a dog is not able to recog nize his master by sight alone. Density of Population. Although there is a certain area of about three and ono-half acres on Manhattan island where the density of population is at the rate of A10, 000 to the square mfle, yet the "ity of Parts shows a far greater aver age density of population than New York, the figures tor Parte being 79,360 square miles, and for New York city proper 40.000 a square mile. The average density of Lon dons population is ffl^QQ a square mile, and that of Berlin is 67,000. German Savings Banks. The savings^ banks of Germany have some 19,000\000 pass books out a.nd heir deposits amount to 13,500, 000.000 marks ($3,213,000,000). These deposits are practically all guaranteed by the various municipal ities of the empire, and ?he condition forms a bulwark of confidence in the security of private wealth and earn ings t'hat cannot be shaken by hard times, panics, bank failures, etc. Fmfler Alphabet. Something new for this section is to be seen on North Railroad ave nue in the shape of a modern up t\> date residence built entirely of con crete or cement stone. It is owned by Mr. W. C. Wolfe; the blocks were manufactured by the XJeneral Manufacturing Company, and the building was erected under the supervision of Contractor Mitch el. The house contains nine rooms and two large hallways, with large and commodious piazzas. The build ing is fitted with all modern con veniences such as sewerage, electric lights, etc. Even the piazza columns and banisters sticks are of cement stone. Great care was taken In the manu facture of the stone and very few expansion and contraction cracks are seen. The chimneys are also built of cement brick. No doubt as people become better acquainted with this material Jt will be extensively used. Throughout ithe buildinig is re inforced with steel and moisture cannot tfossibly penetrate for the walls are all double, and there Is an air space of two Inches, which in sures complete dryness and uniform temperature. , Immediately afber the residence was completed it was occupied by Dr. Donald D. Salley. Ask Taft to Aid Cause. Chicago, Nov. 6.?A dispatch to the Tribune from Denver, col., says; A monster petition to be circulated among the women of America, and then submitted to President-elect Taft, is the immediate plan of the National American Woman's Suffrag ist Association. Announcement of this fact was made yesterday by the Rev. Anna Howard, president of the associa tion. A special appeal was made to the Colorado women to assist in the movement by securing the signatures of every woman in the State. "Mr. Taft has often said he was willing the women of Amrica should have the right of franchise if they desired it," the president said. "Now is the time to give him an op portunity to show what he meant by this statement." * The woman that a man likes is the woman that makes him believe he does. Fine City Lots. vDr. D. j/,HVd?lck*h?? opened up' a suburb which he very appropriately has named Fairvlew. It is located In the North-eastern portion of the city, as shown in cut in ad. in another column. The lots are about 5-8 miles from the Court House, and about 10 minutes walk to the business center. They are high, overlooking the city and beautifully situated in a first class section. This looks like a fine chance to build a home, particularly so when you con sider that labor, lumber and other material are cheaper now than they have been In several years past. We understand that these tots can be bought on easy terms. Star gazers may be looking up in the world, but never in the financial sense of the word. A Paying Investment. Mr. John White, of 28 Highland avenue, Houlton, Maine, says: "Have been troubled with a cough every winter and spring. Last winter I tried many advertised remedies, but the cough continued until I bought a 50c bottle of Dr. Kings New Dis covery; before that was half gone, the cough was all gone. This winter the same happy result has followed; a few doses once more banished the annual cough. I am now convinced that Dr. King's New Discovery is the best of all cough and lung reme dies."
