HOW ABOUT YOUH TO!? What Are You Doing to Im prove It? tW'T BE BEHIND THE TIMES Splendid Example of Community Bet terment Set by Civic Club Formed by Women In a Pennsylvania Town. Ac'a'vo Work In Several Lines. i What are you doing for your town? What is the personal service con tri b-' ntefil by yon to your home community? Are you co-operating? Are you Inter ested in your streets, in seeing that they are swept, sprinkled and kept free Irena refuse? Do you visit the school? Are yon encouraging the growing of fiawers on thp school playground? K not, it Is to be feared you are be hind the times. Throughout the whole Jasd an aroused civic Interest has been manifesting itself in the betterment of communities, no matter how small. 3Ih? "Spotless Town" idea has taken a ?rnr root, and the eucrgetic citizen is 'wcrfcing for the town benutifnl. Women's clubs have been formed for tho distinct purpose of improving sev eral large communities in Penusylva *ku In smaller towns numerous clubs ,haTc been formed for the purpose of comaacnity betterment. In towns, too. ?where there are no societies for the explicit purpose'Of conducting this ?work notable improvements have been made by the women's clubs. Indeed, mach polishing up has been done by the busy hands of the women, and de partments for civic improvement are cavrylug on active work. It was just about ten-years ago that & number of women of Carlisle, Fa.. mot to consider a matter of importance ?that of town cleanliness. What did they do? Well, a club was formed, and before sis months had passed the membership exceeded 15ft, Of course the matter of town bet terment is a personal one. Everybody must do his share. So the Indies of Carlisle got after housekeepers and janitors of public buildings and asked them ail to make the places in their charge examples of cleanliness, 'says the Philadelphia North American. Peo ple who kept street stands and the renters of market stalls were visited, and soon things took a different ap pearance. An ordinance fori lidding the throwing of litter on the streets was prepared, introduced in the coun cil and passed. Ifivc years rolled away, and Carlisle had changed its appearance; An anti spitting ordinance had been prepared by the ladles and passed by the town council. Billboards, public dumps and many objectionable business signs had been removed. An observant stranger would have noticed that, whereas meats and fruits und various foods in stores and on street stands bad for merly been exposed to the flies, tbey now were covered by netting. And through the streets during the warm seasons one could see a huge sprinkler, with the name of the Civic club paint ed on It. ' Soon the Children's League of Good Citizenship was formed- The member ship ran near to the 2,000 mark. One half hour a month was given in all the schools to the members of the cdncatioual committee of the club. Daring this period they addressed the children, and their interest In the town and its welfare was aroused. To stimulate an interest, in trees and flowers the club gives premiums each year for shade and fruit trees that have been planted one year. The va cant spots of Carlisle bloom with flow ers. Along the stone walls of yards during the summer one can :>ee clam l>ering nasturtiums and other flowers, Upon the lawns of the public schools the club has placed flowers, vines aud hedges. For four years a savings department was conducted, where saviugs from 1 cent upward were received. Substa tions wore established in four stores, aad during its existence thousands of dollars were cared for. The depart ment was discontinued with the open ing ol a savings department in the town bank. Perhaps one of the most prominent features of town life is the lack of en tertainment. Well, there is no such lack, thanks to the ladies, in Carlisle. Under the club's auspices during the summer open air entertainments are given. During one summer a series of concerts was rendered by the baud of the Carlisle Indian school. And then there is a kindergarten, a beautiful, cheerful, sunny place, where parents may send their little ones for irarty instruction. The membership of the club now ex ceeds 300. Mrs. Edward W. Diddle. Hie president, has been active in in augurating similar movements in other communities. ? ; Improvement of Grounds. Do not limit your work to money making enterprises. If you live in the country, get as much pleasure from your environments as possible. Try to improve the home ground from year to year. Plant somewhere on the premises a few trees every year, which will add more and more lo Hie happi ness of your family. Like Marrying by Phone. Wan samaker, Mfg. Co. WITHOUT A MOON. Influence of Our Fair Satellite on the Ocean Tides. Once, some OO.u??.CC? years ago, the : earth, then a muss of molten lava, re volved upon its axis In about five hours instead of, as now, in twenty-four, says the Chicago News. In that dim, faraway past the moon, itself a great flaming orb, much larger than at pres ent, was only a few hundred miles from the earth, and as the two planets spuD with fearful velocity the attrac tive power of our satellite, the moon, raised a tide wave of molten lava, hundreds of feet high, which contin ually raced beneath iL This put a drag upon the earth's rotation, and slowly and more slowly the earth turn ed, the day lengthened and the moon receded. Without a moon the oceans of the world would be practically tideless. The little moon that often looks no big ger than a cart wheel has power to raise the ocean into vast tidal waves. The sun's power to raise tides is so slight hi comparison that the solar tides by themselves are scarcely worthy of consideration. Were It not for these moon caused tides the whole map of the latitudes forty degrees north and south of the equator would have been so vastly different from what it actually is that the most vivid imagination can scarce ly picture it. England, for instance, would in nil probabiMty still be a part of the European eonlinent, as it was once before the tides and tide caused currents cut the stnit of Dover, in which case It Is almost certain that the British natiou would not have attaiued its present greatness. Astronomers and historians would be lost without the moon. Without her there would have been no means for savage or early nations to record time by months. The revolution of the moon around the earth from west to esst has been the means of noting time since history began. Fahrenheit and Centigrade. The Fahrenheit thermometer is the one in general use in this country, ex cept among some of the scientists, who use the Centigrade. It would be well for all the boys and girls to know wherein the difference between them consists. In the Centigrade the space between I he freezing point and. the boiling point is divided into ICO de grees-, while in the Fahrenheit it is di vided into ISO degrees. A degree of the Centigrade, therefore, is higher than a degree Fahrenheit in the pro portion of 1) to .">, but as zero in the Centigrade is at the freezing point and in the Fahrenheit at 32 degrees above that this must Im; considered in com paring them. To express JO degrees Centigrade In the Fahrenheit scale mul tiply 10 by I) and divide by 5, which will give IS, then add the .'12 degrees not reckoned in Centigrade and you will have 50, which is the exact equiv alent of 10 Centigrade. The Obliging Aunt. "Come, children; I'll piny 'blind cow' with you. "Whom have I by the hair? "Gracious me! What i:? it? "Children, help, help, help!-' The Hellend Prin-.ross. There Is a beautiful flower in Hol land called lhe evening primrose. It has escaped from cultivation and now grows wild in many places. The plant is about five feet in height atiti is cov ered with flowers of a brilliant yellow color. A traveler who came upon a field of these primroses shortly before sunset describes what he calls the dra matic effect made by them. It is at that hour that the flowers open, and as lie approached the field they all open ed at once, and so suddenly that it seemed as it' a magic wand had touch ed the laud and covered it with a golden sheet.
