HANDWRITING OF AUTHORS.
Dickon's Bine Ink and Paper
Byron's Copy and Erasures.
An interesting itndy is the hand*
writing of authors, as it indicates to
a greater or less degree their per
sonal temperaments.
Longfellow wrote a bold, open
backhand, which was the delight of
printers, says the Scientific Ameri
can. Joaquin Miller writes .<uch a
bad hand that he often becomes
puzsled over Mb own work and the
printer sings the praises of the in
vention of the typewriter.
Charlotte Bronte's writing seemed
to have been traced with a cambric
needle, and Thackeray's writing,
while marvellously neat and precise*
was so small that the best of eyes
were needed to read it. Likewise the
writing of Capt. Marryat was so
microscopic that when he was inter
rupted in his labors he was obliged
to mark the place where he left off
by sticking a pin in the paper.
Napoleon's was worse than illegi
ble, and it is said that his letters
from Germany to the Empress Jose
phine were at first thought to be
rough maps of the seat of war. j
Carlylo wrote a patient, crabbed
and oddly emphalied hand. The
penmanship of Bryant was aggress
ive, well formed and decidedly pleas
ing to the eye; while the chirography
of Scott, Hunt, Moore and Gray was
smooth and easy to read but did
not express distinct Individuality.
m Byron's handwriting was nothing
more than a scrawl. His additions
to bis proofs frequently exceeded in
volume the original copy, and in one
of his poems, which contained in the
original only four hundred lines, one
thousand were added in the proofs.
The writing of Dickens was min
ute, and he had a habit of writing
with blue ink on blue paper. Fre
quently erasures and Interlineations
made his copy a burden to his pub

Curious Marriage Custom?.
Wedding customs in Servla, that
little kingdom in Europe, are curi
ous, indeed, from an American stand
point.. For instance, neither the
bride nor the bridegroom is the most
important figure In a Servian wed
ding, but the best man takes the
leading part. He carefully guards
the bride all the day before the wed
ding takes piece, and sleeps out
side her chamber the night before
the girl is to be married. He wears
a big stiff sash made of heavy silk,
carries a big white staff and a huge
boquet for himself.
There are no bridesmaids, but two
godfathers,1 each of whom presents
to the bride a silk dress. After the
priest has performed the ceremony
the best man takes the bride around
the chureh and she klsBes all her
girl friends good-bye and 1? finally
carried off to the bridegroom, who
at last gets his wife from the hands
of the beet man.
Then the happy couple return to
their Intended home. Bridal tours
are foreign to Servian ideas and only
the very rich or the nobility Indulge
in them.

Italian Beggars.
As the natural beauties of Italy
increase toward the south, so do the
beggars in numbers and persistence.
The lame, the halt and the blind con

The Greek Catholics.
In the United States there are
about .'00,000 Greek Catholics. They
must..not . be confounded with the
Greek Orthodox churchmen, who
conic from Russia and Greece. The
Greek Catholics are those of the
Eastern Greek Church, who are In
full communion with the Roman
Catholics, and who acknowledge the
pope as the chief bishop and head of
the church. Most of the Greek Catho
lics in this country are by nationality
Rutbenlans or "little Russians,"
Roumanians, Italians, and Syrians
The Ruthenians come from Calatia
and the Carpathian Mountains, the
Roumanians from eastern Hungary,
the Italians from Calabria and Sic
ily, and the Syrians from various
parts o? Turkey. They have pros
pered greatly in the United States,
ami are settled mostly in Pennsyl
vania. They have at present over
100 churches, about -10 schools and
