SHOT BYiROBBER.
ATLANTIC CITY FURNISHES A
SENSATION.
[Wealthy Clubman of Baltimore Shot
on Board Walk at the Popular Wa
tering Place Wednesday Night.
The imminence of an arrest in
Baltimore', Md., in connection with
the shootinj of Chas B. Roberts, on
Atlantic City's board walk Wednes
day night, the intimation that the
police are in a position to identify
Roberts's assailant, the asertion,
that, contrary to what has been hith
erto published, the would-be murder
er was not masked, thus upsetting
the story of attempted highway
robbery, and the remarkable num
ber of conflicting statements relative
to the crime, were the features of
the day's developments in the case.
Atlantic City, N. J., August 28.?
Refusing to accept stories to the ef
fect that Chas B. Roberts, the wealthy
clubma o nfBaltimore, was shot by
a highwayman while in a rolling
chair on the board walk with Mrs. G.
Williamson also of Baltimore,- on
Wednesday night, the police of that
city are still working upon the theory
that the Baltimorean was the victim
of a vengeful man. While they will
not say that they believe Mrs. Wil
liams's husband knows something
(about the shooting, they admit that
he will not be eliminated from tue
case until he has proven conclusive
ly that he was entirely ignorant of
the shooting, and the circumstances
which led up to it. So determined
are they in this direction that De
tective Harry Wilson was sent to
Baltimore to make a thorough in
vestigation.
The wounded man is still in a seri
ous condition at the city hospital.
Iis condition is considered dangcron'.
and the physician will not probe for
the bullet in his liver until his con M
tion improves. They fear that to
operate upon him now might prove
fatal. . ?;>,
Mrs. Williams is still at the lintel
Brighton, and while the police ???ill
not say that she is detained a? a
witness they led inquirers to believe
that such is the case. The negro, who
was pushing the rolling chair in
which Roberts and Mrs. Williams
were at the time of the shooting, is
still locked up, and if he knows who
Mr. Roberts's assailant is he declines
to make known his identity.
Relatives of Mr. Roberts gave out
a statement in which they said that
Mr. Roberts came there to see C. J.
Oley Norris on business, and that the
board walk ride was a incident which
followed a. dinner at the Shelbourne
with Mrs. Williams and a party of
friends. Chas. Stewart, a brother
in-law of the injured man.said:
"Why, the whole thing is as simple

as can be. It was merely an attempt
ed robbery. From what I can learn
Mr. Roberts was asked to step out of
the chair, and before he could move
he was shot down. At tue time, in
the excitement and suffering severe
ly he could only give a brief exp' 'na
tion, and this was verified by Mrs.
Williams.
"As far as there being anything
clandestine in the meetings of Mr.
Roberts and Mrs. Williams onne of us
believe it. Up until Tuesday Mr.
Roberts did not even know he was
coming here. He always stopped at.
the Brighton, and since Mrs. Wil
liams was there it was but natural
that he should meet her. He invited
Mrs. Williams and her daughter to
dine with him at "the Sbelbourne.
Then he asked her to take a ride in
a rolling chair.
"Mrs. Roberts and Mrs. Williams
have known each other for years.
There was absolutely nothing in
their going out together, but they
just happened to be victifs of a high
wayman."
Mrs. Williams describing the shoot
ing corroborates the peroral opinion
of the friends of Mr. Roberts, and
is positive that the man who did the
shooting stopped the chair in which
she and Mr. Roberts were, and order
ing them to throw up their hands,
demanded money. When Mr. Rob
erts refused to turn over the money,
the highwayman shot. The robber,
she says, was masked.
Ponceman Rust, who heard the
shooting and ran to the scene thinks
the shot was fired at Roberts from
the back of the chair, whielris hT
contradiction to the statements that
the robber confronted Mr. Roberts
and Mrs. Williams and fired directly
into the front of the chair.
So far as clearing up the mystery
is concerned, little definite progress
has been made.
Mrs. Roberts, the wife of the
mounded man, arrived tnere Saturday.
?!ie is in close attendance upon her
{husband and refuses to be seen or
: '"ive aything to say. Several of Mrs.
j Williams's relatives also arrived on
(Saturday and joined her at. the

\ CHILD'S BODY FLOATED PAST.
People on River Bank at Pelzer Wit
ness Gruesome Sight.
A dispatch from Anderson, says
people in the city Friday morning
from Pelzer said that a crowd stood
on the river bank Wednesday morn
ing watching the flood water pour
over the dam. The river was filled
with trees and debries of every de
scription. As the people watched
they saw a pair of mules to a buggy
float down stream, go over the dam
and disappear into .the. rapid current
below. A little later a horse hitched
to a buggy came .along. A trunk was
tied on the rear of the buggy. A
little later the body of a little white
child floated down, went over the
dam and disappeared.
The water was so high and turbul
ent that nothing could be done to
rescue the body of the child and it
disappeared immediately after going
over the dam. No otner human
bodies were seen in the river.
It is not known to whom the bug
gies and mules belonged, but the
supposition Is that they were caught
when some of the bridges above
Pelzer were washed away. It is not
known whether any lives other than
that of the little child were lost and
the identity of the child has not yet.
been dicovered. ?
Another Bank Robbed.
At Rochester, a bank in Filmore,
Alleghany county, was robbed Friday
morning. It is said the robbers got
a large-sum of money. *
