I Sam. xvi, 7?Commentary Prepared

When the Lord told Samuel that Saul
could no longer be lung it grieved/him
ao that be cried unto the Lord all
night, and. although he went to see
h?m no more, he continued to mourn
for him (chapter zv, 11, 35); hence the
opening words of our lesson chapter,
"How long wilt thou mourn for Saul
seeing I have rejected him from reignr
ing over Israel?" It is well to remind
ourselves that the cause of Saul's be
? > lug rejected by the Lord was his re
jection of the word of the Lord <xv,
. 23, 26). for in these days the word of
the Lord Is being rejected by many
- who still profess to be His friends, but
It cannot be. for those who reject or
even question the word of God are in
the service of Him whose first record
ed utterance was, "Yea. hath God
said" (Gen. ill, 1). There are inany
also who. like Samuel, seem to side
more with the Sauls than with the
Lord. Matt, xii, 30. is a searching
word. "He that Is not with me is
against me." and we must stand whole
heartedly with Him' for every word
the Spirit has written, receiving it,
holding It fast, rightly dividing It and
holding it forth (Jas. i; Tit 1: II Tim.
Ii; Phil. Ii). To be on the Lord's side
means to stand wltb Him against even
the nearest and dearest as Levi did.
for only thus can we turn people away
from iniquity (Ex. xxxli, 26-29; MaL
1 IL 4-6).
"Fill thine horn with oil and go; 1
will send thee, * ? * for I have provid
ed me a king." These words carry us
back to that great name "Jehovab
jlreh" (Gen. xxli, 24). The Lord will
see or provide, and He who provided
the lamb has also provided a king who
shall sit on the throne of David and
t reign over the bouse of Jacob forever.
The Lamb and the King shall be seen
to be one and the same, for when John
was told that the lion of Judah bad
prevailed to break tbe seals and open
the book be looked and beheld a iamb
as it had been slain (Rev. v, 5. 6).
Thinking of tbe Lord seeing and pro
viding leads me to say that I find a
lot of comfort in the name of that
well by which the Lord comforted
Hagar (Gen. xvi, 14, margin). "The
well of Him that llveth and seetb me."
"We are reminded also of our Lord's
word, "Your Heavenly Father know
eth what things ye have need of"
(Matt. vi. 32?.
Samuel seems to be a little out of
fellowship, for his "How can I go?
Saul will kill me" (verse 2), does not
sound like prompt and hearty obedi
ence. Possibly his "continued "mourn
ing for the rejected Saul was the
cause of It. The Lord graciously and
patiently gave him a commission which
Included tbe former and dispelled his
fears. Docibtless this was the Lord's
original intention, but Samuel got in
his question of fear before the Lord
had finished His commission. Now It
Is all plain, and Samuel has only to
- do that which tbe Lord spake (verse 4).
and he did iL Jesse'and seven of his
sons came to meet Samuel, wbo bad
been looking so long at a tall, fine look
ing man, Saul, that when be set eyes
upon Eliab. whose countenance and
height made him conspicuous, he said.
"Surely tbe Lord's anointed is before
Him"" (verses &'7h:i^'^e*tfce:Xdrd>ff
message, "1 have refused him, for tbe
Lord seeth not as man seetb. for man
looketb on the outward appearance,
but the Lord looketb on tbe heart"
What a word for us to keep In mind
la connection with I Cor. L 26-20! We
will need it as long as we continue la
these/mortal - bodies?not tbe outward
of form or figure, of height or coun
tenance, of eloquence or oratory, or
anything that tbe merely natural man
is apt to consider, but tbe attitude of
the heart toward God. They said of
the great apostle Paul that while bis
letters were weighty and powerful,
his bodily presence was weak and his
speech contemptible (11 Cor. x. 10)
As the seven sons passed before Sam
uel the word came again and again.
'The Lord hath not chosen this." What
a great and comforting truth it Is that
when a sinner comes to Christ for sal
vation no^ one Is ever refused, reject
ed or cast out! (John vt 37.)
Samuel is perplexed, for the Lord
had said that He had provided a king
from among the sons of Jesse, so he
asks If all are here and Is informed
that the youngest keepetb the sheep
at home. Everything stopped till be
was sent for, and as be came the Lord
said to Samuel. "Arise, anoint him.
for this is he" (verse 12). He, too, bad
a beautiful countenance, so that need
not be a hindrance, but he had a heart
that was right with God back of It
My heart rejoices in this story of the
boy who was left at b~me when all
the rest went to meet the prophet be
ing the one whom God had chosen.
Eest assured, O young man or youag
woman, that If your heart is right with
God the one thing to do is Just what
you are now doing, whether it be help
ing mother in the home or father on
the farm or in the store or office or
workshop, and when the Lord wants
you elsewhere He will unmistakably
call you. Run not before Him. He
that belleveth shall not ni?ke haste.
David is now anointed in the midst of
his brethren. The Spirit of the Lord
came specially upon him from that
(ay forward (verse 13).
