NOT DOCTORING MUCH,

A sickly looking man came into the

wanted something to "kinder
straighten him out." After he had
described his symptoms which did
not indicate anything at all serious,
:\e physician asked him if he had
been taking anything for his trou
bles.
"Well, no; at least none to speak
of," was the reply. "I heard that
the extract of dandeline was good for
troubles like mine, so I took three
pints of that, but it didn't seem to
do much good. Then I got me two
bottles of Smith's Healing Compound
and a box of Green's Sure Cure Pills ?
and took 'em, and I kinder think they
helped me some."
"Did you take anything else?" ask
ed the physician.
"Yes; my wife fixed me up a mess
of poke-berry and calumus and mul
llen and rue and boneset and tansy,
and a few other yarbs, and I took
that for a while, until one of my
neighbors sent me over something
he'd bought the receipt of from a
gypsy woman. Then I didn't feel so
well, so I changed off to some stuff
I bought of a peddler, and a little
quinine twice a day. I ain't taking
anything now but a little of elixir
of a hundred roots and some bitters.
I ain't gaining very fast, so I thought
I'd come in and see if you thought
I needed anything else."?Judge's Li

A Sage Contribution.
One day recently there entered the
office o. a Philadelphia real estate
man a tattered and forlorn girl of
' 14 cr thereabout, who sidled up to
his desk with a memorandum book in
her hand.
Ordinarily the Philadelphian is the
politiest of persons, but this day he
was so busy that he knew not which
way to turn. So, with a swift glance
from the corner of his eye, he said
rather sharply, "Well, what do you
want?"
"Mister, please buy a chance on
our go-cart," pleaded the girl hesi
tatingly.
"Your go-cart!" repeated the real
estate man, who is a bachelor. "What
on earth can I do .vith a go-cart, even
if I should get it?"
"Oh, you won't get It, breathless
ly came from the girl. "Please buy

The Ultra Microscope.
The ultra microscope is a recent de
vice of science. By its aid It is ex
pected that many micro-organisms
which hitherto defied observation will
be detected. As the classification of
microbes has advanced, biolog'sts
have incllnea to the' conclusion that
many must still remain unknown, too
small to be perceived with any instru
ment hitherto in use.
The new apparatus is the invention
of two Frenchmen, Cotton and .\ion
ton. It involves no change in the.ex
isting arrangement of lenses. It is
the system of lighting that is revolu
tionized. The ray is used at right
angles to the axis of the instrument,
instead of coinciding with it. Thus
the light sweeps across the objective
parallel with its plane. ^
By this means it is said that many
i particles so small that they have de
fled detection under the most power
ful glasses become visible as brilliant
points. It is a new world, enthusias
tic microscopists say, that is opened
to scientific study.
Italians Like Picture Shows.
Milan, the center of Italy for the
moving picture machine trade, has al
ready about 40 such theaters. Every
available hall is being turned into a
moving picture show, while nearly
every second and third-rate theater
and "cafe chantant" finishes the ev
ening's entertainment with a few cine
matograph pictures. During the dun
summer months even the larger the
aters are used.
HAVE A CARE.

Children Praying About Dying.
A British scientist has spoken
against children praying about dying
while they are asleep. It is a great
mistake, he said, to let children think
of sudden death.

A novel experiment In training
girls to manage a home Is to be
made in London it the Education
Committee of the^ London County
Council adopt a scheme which has
been submitted to them.
The aim 1b to make the girls pro
ficient in the domestic duties they
would have to perform as the wives
of artisans earning from 28s to ?3 a
week. In addition to washing, cook
ing and cleaning and the general
management of the home on a sys
tematic basis, they would be taught
how "to shop" in the most economi
cal way. ,
At the beginning of each week a
certain sum would be set apart for
rent, clothing, Insurance, traveling
expenses and for providing a fund
expenses and for providing a fund
for a "rainy day." The remainder
would be available for food and any
little luxuries that might be possible.
In order that the training may be
as practicable as possible it is nec
essary that the time occupied in at
tending to baby in most homes
should not be overlooked in the pro"
gram of the experimental home. It
Is proposed each week, therefore, to
undertake the care of a child be
longing to a working class family in
the neighborhood, and in this way
the girls would gain further valu
able experience.
Every piece of furniture and every
utensil would have the price paid
for it marked or it, bo that the
girls might have an Idea of how
much each article can be bought for.
Buckles.
Big gilt, silver and steel buckle?
are the thing in dull effects as well
as bright, and in shape the round,
the square and the oblong are equally
favored.
Jet buckles and those made of tor
toise shell are great favorites now
among the fashionables.
While many of the designs are
plain, figured designs in buckles are
also well thought of, and many oi
them Lave jewels of different buna
inserted.
In buttons the fashion ideas tend
considerably *to the development of
large sires and odd shapes.
Crocheted buttons with touches of
embroidery are commanding inter
