Notice is hereby given that the City
Treasurer's office will be open for the
purpose of receiving such Licenses and
the compnnnd tax and dog tax imposed
by the ordinance of the city, from the
1st to the 15th of April, 1908, inclusive,
from 9 o'clock a. m., to 2 p. m., Sundays
excepted.
All parties interested will take due
notice and govern themselves accord
ingly.

An ordinance to regulate Licenses in

Section 1. Be it ordained by the May

every person, firm, company or corpora
tion engaged in or intending to engage
in any trade, business or profession here
inafter mentioned, or keeping an office or
place of business open for the same?

therefor in the manner hereafter pre
scribed. Every person, firm, company
or corporation commencing business
after the said first day of April, in each
and every year, shall obtain a license
therefore before entering upon such
trade business or profession.
?Sjc. 2 Every person, firm, company
or corporation required by this ordi
nance to obtain a 'icense to engage in
any trade, business or profession for
which a license is required, shall make
application therefor to the City Clerk
and Treasurer and shall give: First, his
or her name or style, and in case of a
firm or company the names of the sever
al persons constituting such firm or com
pany; Second, the trade, business or pro
fession for which a license is rcquiaed;
Third, the place where such trade, busi
ness or prof* ssion is tobe carried on;
and incase of dealers in goods, wares
and merchandise, ? uggists, dealers in
carriages, buggies and wagons, other
than their own manufacture, dealers in
pianos, cabinet organs and other musi
cal instruments, the application shall
be in writing and sworn to which shall
state also the amount, extent and value
of business carried on and their gross
sales or receipts for the proceeding fis
cal year. All of which, and answers to
questions relative to which, shall be
given under oath Nothing herein con
tained shall in any manner affect any
other requirements of trade business or
professions.
Sec. 3. If any person or persons shall
6iercise, or carry on any trade, business
or profession, or shall keep an office or
place for such business?for the exercis
ing, carrying on or doing of which a li
cense is required by this ordinance
without first taking out such license as
in that behalf is required, he, she or thoy
shall for every offense be subjest to a
penalty not exceeding one hundred dol
lars, or to imprisonment with or without
hard labor, not exceeding thirty days,
as may be adjudged by the Mayor or
acting Mayor trying the case.
Sec. 4. The license granted under
this ordinance shall not authorize the
person or persons (except lawyers, phy
sicians, dentists and auctioneers) or
firm, company or corporation mentioned
therein to exercise or earry on any
trade, business or profession specified in
such license in any other place than that
mentioned therein; and every person,
firm or corporation exercising or carry
ing on any trade, business or profesion
or doing any act for which a license is
required shall keep said license at all
times of business in a conspicuous part
of the business place, and on demand of
any authorizedjoiBcial of the city govern
ment shall produce such license, and un
less he shall dc so shall be deemod to
have no license.
Sec. 5. It shall bo the duty of the Chief
of Police to detect and report all parties
failing to take out a license as herein
required. He shall visit each Jind every
place of business from time to time after
the 15th day of April, in every year, and
ascertain and report immediately to the
Mayor the names and places of business
of all persons failing to take ont a license
and especially transients aud parties re
cently arried in the city who may be en
gaged in any business for which a licen
se is required.
Sec 6. Upon the removal of any per
son or person from the house or premi
ses at which the trade, business or pro
fession mentioned in such Jicens3 was
authorized, it shall be lawful for the city
clerk and treasurer, and he is hereby
required to authorize by endorsement on
such licanse the person removing as
aforesaid to any other place to carry on
the trade, business or profession specifi
ed in such license at the place to which
such persons may have removed.
Sec. 7. All licenses for the year grant-1
ed under this ordinance shall continue
in force until the 31st day of March
next sncceeding the date of issue; and
no license, except as provided for by
limitation, per diem or month, shall be
issued for less time or rate than one
year. The city clerk and treasurer shall
prepare a proper form to be issued in
each case.
Soc 8. Applications for license of all
kinds shall be maoe to the City Clerk
and Treasurer and all fees for same shall
be paid to him in advance; and in any
case where license fees may be paid to
the chief of police, ho shall report the
same to the city treasurer at once and
lie* nse shall be issued.
>ec. 9. Applications for the transfer
of license shall bo made in writing to
the city treasurer, referred by him to
the Committee on Finance and if favor
ably reported on by them, to be author
ized by the mayor.

their gross siles or receipts for the
preceding year do not exceed
$10,000.00:
The sum of 815.00 when such gross
sales or receipts are over 810,000.00 and
do not exceed $20,000.00.
The Bum of 820.00 when such gross
sales or receipts are over $20,000.00 and
do not exceed $30 000.00.
The sum of 830.00 when such gross
sales or rec'-ipts are over $30,000.00 and
do not exceed $40,000.00 and one dollar
on each additional $10,000.00 or frac

ous year, such person shall pay to the
City Clerk and Treasurer as license
tho sum of twent>-flve dollars at the
time of beginning business; and in case
it shall appear at the end of the year
that such license so paid is more than
his gross receipts would require him to
pay the City Council shall refund to him
the amount so paid in excess of the
amount required by this Section, or give
euch person credit for same on his li
cense for the next year
Sec. 12. The amount to be charged for
license for any other business, trade,
profession or occupation, not heroin
specifically enumerated, shall be fixed by
the committee on finance, but said com
mittee shall have no authority to change
or reduce the license fees herein fixed:
Provided that in case of short term li
cense ta.-cen out in the latter part of tho
fiscal year, the committee on finance
may in their discretion reduce the licen
se fee. r
Sec. 13. For the purpose of this or
dinance, each business, or occupation,
herein separately and specifically men
tioned and enumerated, shall be deem
ed to be a separate and distinct busi
nes or occupation, and the payment of
license for any business or occupation
herein mentioned and enumerated
shall not be held to include or embrace
the license for any other business apt
occupation herein mentioned and-}
enumerated, unless so specified in this
ordinance.
Sec. 14. The City Council reserves
the right, to revoke any license for any
cause which may seem to be just.
Sec. 15. It shall be the duty of the
City Clerk to make and keep posted in a
conspicuous place in his office an alpha
betical list of persons paying license
under tliis ordinance expiring with the
current fiscal year, which shall contain
n*me of the person or firm, tho business
or occupation and amount paid for such
license.
Sec. 1(1. That all Ordinances or parts
of Ordinances inconsistent herewith, be,
and the same are hereby repealed.

Orangeburg, South Carolina, this 14th
day of February A. D. 1908 and in the
one hundred and thirty-second year of
American Independence.
