though it is thus always aired and

'?Many people nowadays discard linen
'sheets altogether, preferring cotton
.'ones, while others keep them only for
summer months, using cotton in
f winter, as being warmer.
In mending household linen the most
^satisfactory way to do is to mend it
/before it is sent to the laundry, not
when it returns starched and ready
j for use once more, says the Philadel
phia Press.
If a thin piece or hole is observed
while the article is in use it should be
put aside and either darned or patched
at the first opportunity.
Tablecloths invariably begin to wear
at the middle and in the side creases
In which they are folded. When this
Is the case the edges of one side of
the cloth should be turned In and neat
ly stitched to form a hem about an
Inch in' width. By this means the
folds in the cloth will come in fresh
lines and the place of the old crease
will have a>new lease of life.
When a cloth is removed from the
table it should be put into a press
and tightly screwed down until want
ed.
If a sheet is hemstitched it should
be done at ooth ends. If only one end
is so worked the wear and tear will
come always in the same place, as the
sheet can only be used one way, with
the hemstitching at the top.
j Once a year it is a very good plan to
devote a whole day to going over the
linen stock and to make renewals
, \ where necessary.
' ) It is a mistake to allow the supply
;of any one article to run too low, for
\ the replenishing of the entire stock at

German "hausfrau" keeps broad em
broidered bands, which she slips
, around her spare sets of linen.
How to Rid the House of Insects.
' A kind of black beetle gets into old
bouses from time to time. To get rid
of them mix up some sugar and pias
ter of parls and place It in little, heaps
about the floor and shelves, wherever
the insects congregate, says the Spo
kane Spokesman-Review. In a little
while they disappear. This also is an
excellent way to get rid of cock
roaches and other bugs. Tarred paper
xis another remedy for bugs of all
kinds, since they object to the odor.
If one does not object to sticky fly
paper, it will be found excellent for
ants and fleas and other small insects
besides flies. Sprinkle a little sugar
over the paper to make it more entic
ing and burn the sheet as soon as it is
fairly filled. A sheet of this sticky fly
paper placed in a nest of fleas or in a
place where they seem to gather will
catch' a number of them. Place a piece
of raw meat in the middle of the fly
paper, and the fleas will be attracted
by it As fast as the paper is full burn
it and put a fresh meet in the same
place.
How to Use Potatoes.
Sui day?Peel, steam, mash; add milk,
butter and salt; then beat till they are
light.
Monday ? Baked potatoes in their
jackets.
Tuesday?Peel and bake with roast
of beef.
Wednesday?Creamed potatoes.
Thursday ? Peel, steam and serve
whole.
Friday?Peel, cut in thin slices length
wise, sprinkle with pepper and salt
and fry lh butter.
Saturday?Potatoes boiled in their
jackets.
How to Make a Dainty Cover.
Here is a Christmas suggestion. A
dainty dressing table or bureau cover
is made of three embroidered band
kerchiefs, lace insertion and edging,
beading and ribbon. The handker
chiefs have plain edges and are joined
by one row of the wide lace insertion
and two rows of the lace beading. The
lace beading and insertion border the
cover and are finished with edging.
Ribbon is threaded through the bead
ing.
(How to Wash Laces.
Make a lather of good soap and hot
water, then squeeze the lace through
and through the latter several times,
taking care not to wring It Rinse in
milk, when the lace will become quite
crisp without being too stiff. If a
cream shade is desired, add cold tea
to the milk till the proper shade is ob
tained. Iron ou the wrong side on
some thick, soft materiul.
How to Mend Boys' Stockings.
Stockings of boys often require a
great deal of darning. In the mending
of bad holes, especially at the knees
and heels, a piece of net is often of
great service. Lay It over the stock

Congressmen Williams and De
Armond Have a Fight
Democratic Congressmen Meet in a
' Personal Encounter on the Floor
of the House.
The spirit of rivalry that for five
years has alternately smoldered and
blazed beween John Sharp Williams,
of Mississippi, leader of the minor
ity, and David D. DeArmond, of Mis
souri, leader of the minority oppos
ition, culminated in a fist fight Fri
day on the floor of the House.
The blows of Representative De
Armond caused blood to flow down
the face of Representative Williams,
and only the forcible interference of
friends cut the combat short. . Mr.
DeArmond bore away a scuffed nose.
The immediate cause of the fight
was the passing of the lie by De
Armond to Mr. Williams, resulting
of a complaint by the former that
the minority leader had broken
faith in "burying" Representative
Booher, of Missouri, by recommend
ing his assignment by Speaker Can
non to the committee on coinage,
weights and measures.
According to the statements of the
participants Mr. Williams defended
his action by declaring that he had
been told by Mr. Booker's colleague,
Representative Lloyd, of Missouri,
that the committee assigned would
be satisfactory to Mr. Booher.
Mr. DeArmond bluntly questioned
the truth of the statement, and af
ter the failure of an effort on his
part to transfer the scene of impend

the 60th Congress, for the House
had been some minutes adjourned
when the first blow was struck. But
there was no lack of witnesses.
The organization of the Houne had
been completed by the announce
ment of the Speaker's assignments
of members to committees, the Re
publican committeemen having: been
selected by the Speaker and the
ttemocratic by Mr. Williams.
Groups of Representatives were
scattered over the floor, discussing
the appointments, the causes, per
haps, behind them and the effects,
maybe, to follow. In the overlooking
galleries loitered a score or so of
women and four times that many
men, viewing the aftermath of aa
interesting session.

Found Dead.
Wm. Stucky. a well known planter
near West Point, Ga., was found
dead with his throat cut last week.
His body lay on a pile of cotton seed
In a storehouse on the Ed Booker
plantation, which Mr. Stucky had
recently leased. An investigation is
being conducted to discover whether
Stucky died as a result of murderous
violence or suicide.

place of meeting, received in return

Murder and Suicide.
A special from Marion, Va., says
William Moody, living about three
miles from Marlon, last week shot
and instantly killed his wife and
then committed suicide. No cause
has been assigned. The couple had
been married only a few months.

ber of the Democratic campaign Con
gressional committee, on the part of
the Senate, for the 1908 campaign.

vvada; Owen of Oklahoma; Taylor of
Tennessee; Culberson of Texas, and
Martin of Virginia.

Soldier Commits Suicide.
George L. Patterson, a private in
Company I, Twenty-third Infantry,
U. S. A., stationed at Fort Ontario,
committed suicide in the guardhouse
Thursday, where he had been confin
ed upon a charge of having been ab
sent without leave. He swallowed
poison. Patterson enlisted at the
Jamestown exposition and is said to
have had a home in Chicago.
