HT PISTOIS POINT, .Young Woman Driven to Altar at Asbury Park.. SAVED BY THE MINISTER. Clergyman Licks Would Be Bride groom, and Wedding Bells Fail to i Ring? One Sided Elopement Result of ! Parents* Disapproval. Driveu to tue altar at pistol's point, <Miss Beiie Crouse, the pretty young daughter cf Rev. N. P. Crouse. pastor of the First Presbyteriau church of Stauhope, N. J., broke down in the midst of a. marriage ceremony which in aaother moment would have made 'her the wife of Percy Bissel!. .' Throwing herself upou the officiating ?clergyman, Rev. Dr. G. M. Griffin, pas tor of the First Methodist church of 'Asbury Park, N; J., she cried hysteric ally bow her lover had forced her to the altar at the point of a revolver. Instantly there was a lively mixup. Dr. Griffin clinching with the suitor, throwing him ?.o the floor and binding ?his arms. Then he took his revolver away and, standing guard over the prostrate form of young Bissell, sent Miss Crouse for a policeman. Instead she rushed to a cottage in Ocean Grove \Where she was stopping with her par ents. Later Bissell broke away from the Methodist parsonage, where the cere mony had been going on, and again forced his attentions on Miss Crouse, rthough iu order to do so he had to 'break through a window of the Ocean Grove house. At this stage of the" proceedings a policeman intervened and, taking Bis sen to the station, started him off on a train for New York. The Crouse family refused to make charges against ?bim and pleaded that the fracas be thushed up. Great efforts were made to keep the affair from the public. The principals have enjoyed a high social standing in Stanhope. Miss' Crouse, daughter of the Presbyterian pastor, is exceedingly pretty and is a social favorite in the town. She recently graduated from Blair Hall. Bissell is the sou of prominent resi dents of Stanhope and until recently .sang In the Presbyterian church choir. (He It a teacher in the Sunday school of the church and a student at the Trenton State Normal school. Objection to his attentions bad late ly been made by Rev. and Mrs. Crouse. The Crouses had taken their daughter to Ocean Grove that she might avoid him. Rev. Mr. Crouse told his daugh ter of rumors about Bissell's life only ?recently, and she immediately wrote THE CLERGYMAN CLINCHED WITH THE SDITOK. him a letter at the Normal school In Trenton refusing to have anything further to do with him, and a few days ago the Rev. Mr. and Mrs. Crouse and their daughter went <to Ocean Grove for a short rest, staying at 70 iLake avenue. Upon receipt of Miss Grouse's letter young Bissell lei t Trenton and -went to iStanhope. Finding the parsonage closed, he went to Ocean Grove. Miss iCrouse met Bissell ou the street as he iwas searching for her. He was great ly excited and demanded that she mar ry him immediately. Miss Crouse flat tly refused and begged him to leave the 4owu. Miss Crouse says she pleaded with him nearly two hours. Finally Bissell, as they walked along the ocean front in the dusk, declared if she refused to marry him he would shoot her and then him .elf. Miss Crouse, thorough ly scared, consented to go to Rev. 0. M. Griffin, whom she knew, and be ?married. Her plan, she says, was to get Bis sell somewhere where she could ob itaiu assistance and protection. Call ing a hackman, the couple were driven to the parsonage of the First Metho dist Episcopal church, and Dr. Griffin ,was asked to marry them. Then she liroke down. After leaving Dr. Griffin's pursouage (Miss Crouse returned to her home for iier mother and had been upstairs bat 41 few minutes when Bissell arrived at the house. Receiving no response to his knock, he broke through a window. iMrs. Issar, who owns the house, told .the young man that Miss Crouse and 'her mother had gone over to Asbury (Park. A most remarkable Instance of ani mal sagaciry is related by James Par rott, an engine driver, and Frank King, a conductor, in the Houston (Tex.) Chronicle. When a southbouud passenger train was near Ha Iis burg a mare suddenly dashed up the track toward the train, running swiftly. It looked as if she would run right iuto the engine, and the air brakes were quickly applied. THE MARE STOPPED AND BEGAN" WHINNY ING. slowing the train down to six or seven miles an hour. Parrott thought the 1 mare was blinded by the headlight, but the train was no sooner slowed down than the mare turned about and went from the train, keeping right down the tracks and making it impossible to run fast lest the animal be struck. The mare went straight to a bridge over a creek, and when within a short distance of the bridge of the railway it was discovered that the colt of the : mare had fallen with all its feet through the bridge, placing It where it would have been killed had not the mare flagged the train. The mare stopped and began whinnying, and the train stopped also. Parrott, the fire man and some of the passengers got off and. relieving the colt, left the mare to trot off with her young as proud as a peacock. GHOSTS'WERE BUSY BEES. Leaking Honey Explains Mystery of Haunted House In Maryland. The mystery surrounding the alleged haunted chamber in the residence of Dr. Thomas Fell, president of St. John's cpllege, at Annapolis, Md., has been cleared up by the discovery of an immense hive of bees uuder the floor ing. It is thought that the. thousands of busy little workers had been making their abode there for some six or eight years. After the bees had been either exterminated or driven out a hive of honey eight feet long and sixteen inches deep was found. It is estimated that there were 250 pounds of it, and 'the family of Dr. Fell has honey enough for its buckwheat cakes for some time to come. The bees and their hive were dis covered by the honey? which began to leak through the ceiling and dropped on the diulng room table, which was directly below. Kerosene and sulphur candles were used to either drive the bees out or kill them. There were thousands of them. The floor of the room was torn up to complete the job. Only one person was stung. Dr. Fell s steward. The bees had made their way beneath the flooring through a small crack under a window sill, aud it Is re markable that their presence had not become known long before tin's. The spare room has generally been used by Dr. Fell's guests, many of whom have complained of hearing strange noises at night, but members of the family laughed the matter into ridicule. Disrobed by Lightning. William i'otter, a colored man of Pearl River. Rockland county. N. Y., was completely disrobed by a lightniug belt during a storm. Potter, who is a.well digger, was discussing the "sit uation" from a soap- box in Jim Met nor's grocery store. A group of vil lagers stood around bun. The light ning shaft hit a tree outside the win dow and enveloped the orator, who was in the midst of a telling argu ment. Wheu the crash was over and the crowd bad recovered from the blinding flash Potter sat l>eforo them as nude as the day he was born. His clothes lay in shreds at his feet burn ing. A doctor found that his right leg was paralyzed and that his sight and hearing had been affected. Geese on a Jag. Martiu Beck, a farmer on the Cone wango hills, near York, Pa., is humili ated to admit three of his geese went on a disgraceful spree after having eaten some pulp from a cider mill. Some time after ihe eating of the pulp the peculiar action of the fowls at tracted the attention of the farmer. They swayed from side to side and cackled hoarsely. Finally one by one they fell limp and apparently dead. Mrs. Beck carried the fowls into the house with the intention of plucking them, when they revived. Since then the geese have kept away from the cider mill and have tried to prevent other geese from going near It. Doing Business Again. A well-known authority on Rheu matism gives the readers of a large New York daily paper the following valuable, yet simple and harmless prescription, which any one can easily prepare at home: Fluid Extract Dandelion, one-half ounce; Compound Kargon, oneounce; Compound Syrup Sarsaparflla, three ounces. While there are many so-called Rheumatism remedies , patent medicines, etc., some of which do give relief, few really give permanent results, and the the above will, no doubt, be great ly appreciated by many sufferers here at this time. W:hile Morconi experts were testing new receiving cones at the top of the tower at the station at Port Morien last week, an operator was in com munication with the wireless station at Manila. The message received was that the American cruiser Philadel phia had arrived. The Marconi people account for the occurrence by the theory that th\: cone at Manila must have been In perfect tune with that at Port Morien. The message from Manila was "picked up" while being sent to some other station on the Pacific or to a war vessel. The message was recorded at the time by an operato i in the receiving ro.-.u at the Marconi station. ? j At the time the experts were ex perimenting in an effort to receive messages from Ireland. They re ceived several messages from the Irish station, and were in the act of making further tests when the instru ments recorded the arrival of the Philadelphia at Manila. The Marconi people say that no mistake was made and that the mes sage was undoubtedly sent by the Manila station, which is about 12, 000 miles distant, and that, as a re sult, experiments with the stations in the east will shortly be attempted Port Morien, where the Marconi station is located, is the most easterly town In Cape Breton. I had a phy sician treat him, but the sores grew worse. Then they began to come on his arms, then on other parts of his body, and' then one came on his chest, worse than the others. Then I called another physi cian. Still he grew worse. At the end of about a year and a half of suffering he grew so bad I had to tie his hands in. cloths at night to keep him from, scratching the sores and tearing the flesh. He got to btva mere skeleton, and was hardly able to walk. My aunt advised me to try Cuticura Soap and Ointment. So great was her faith in it that she gave me a small piece of Cuticura Soap to try and a little Cuticura Ointment. I took it home without any faith, but to please her I tried it, and it seemed to dry up the 6ores a little. I sent to the drug store and got a cake of Cuticura Soap and a box of Cuticura Ointment and followed the directions, and at the end of about two months the sores were all well. He has never had any sores of any kind 6ince. He is now strong and healthy, and I can sincerely sny that only for your most wonderful remedies my pre cious child would have died from those terrible sores.
