Rioting Follows Strike.
Although it was announced Tues
day night that the strike at the
American Can company's plant in
Chicago had been settled the rioting
around the place was fiercer Wednes
day than it has been at any time and
one man, John Nichols, lost his life
by a bullet fired, it is said, from a
train on which were a number of non
union men being taken back to the
city after the conclusion of the day's
work. The fighting beagn early in the
morning, when 300 Greeks who have
been employed during the strike at
tempted to come to the factory. They
were met at the gates by a large num
ber of union pickets who attacked
them with stones and clubs. A large
detachment of the police had their
hands full in protecting the Greeks
when a shot fired from the crowd
aroused the Greeks to fury. Those
who had entered the factory came
pouring out armed with knives and
revolvers and attempted to attack the
union men and their sympathizer who
were assaulting those Greeks who
had not yet reached the gateway.
The police after a desperate struggle
managed to keep the two bodies of
men apart. In this light a number of
men were battered up. At night
when the 300 Greeks left the plant
they were attacked by a mob fully
10.000 strong that pelted them with
stones, sticks and bottles.
A Warning to AH.
The Cotton Plant says the almanac
makers ought to insert this warning
the first of April: '"Look out for the
oily tongued agent about this time."

one of these fellows went around
amongst the farmers ostensibly in
trouducing some machine that the
farmers were interested in. He was
I not taking orders, but finding out
' probable purchasers so as to have cir
culars sent by the house. For some
reason or other he could not write
and he asked the farmer to write his
name and address. He mauaged so
the name would be on the lower right
hand corner of a blank page in his
memorandum, which page was about
the size and shape of a note. After
getting a few of these signatures he
filled out bankable notes above tbe
signature, and then cashed them.

rods, patent chums, farming imple
ments cooking stoves and deal very
cautiously with them. Always buy

Overcome By Gaa.
Oscar S< Tenon, Edward Hammond
and Jacob H .mmond, young men in
their twenties, were all found dead in
bed Wednesday morning at their
home, No. 505 Richmond street.
They were overcome with gas.
Five Were Drowned.
Five persons, members of apleasur
party from the Florida Methodist col
lege at Sutherland, Fla., were
drowned near1 Anclote litrht house
Sunday night. The dead are: Mrs.
Walker, wife of the president of the
college.
Miss O'Connor of Atlanta.
Miss Slaughter of Sutherland.
Miss McCray of Sutherland.
Mr. Bouland of Sutherland.
President Walker and Miss Newton
reached, the beach alive. The bodies
of Mrr Walker and Miss O'Connor
have hod yet been recovered. The
bodies of the other thiee who lost
their lives were washed ashore on the
beach and recovered. President
Walker had taken the party out for a
cruise to the houss, but met with
rough weather and the boat was over
turned in the gulf. The Florida
Methodist college is located at Suther
land, on the west coast of the gulf,
about 30 miles from Tampa.
Who Are They?
Senator Burton, of Kansas, who
was convicted of accepting compensa
tion to further the interests of a
fraudulent concern before the post
ouice ^department in his admissions
made statements which must have
brought consternation among the
other senatorial grafters, but to their
intense relief he did not mention any
names. He said many of his sen
jatorial brethren mad 3 large sums of
money "practicing before the depart
ments," some of them making as
much as 840,000 a year. We agree
with the Columbia Record that it is a
pity that the senator did not go more
into detail and tell the country who
these men are. What the people want
is to get those "big up" in this graft
ing business at the national capital.
A small beginning has been made,
and for the good of the country there
should be no stopping until all the
rascals are cleaned out.
No Bolter Wanted.
Because he voted for McKinley in
18f 6 James R. Gordon, a leading busi
ness man of Richmond, Va., has been
compelled by party pressure to with
draw from the race for mayor. Mr.
Gordon announced himself as a candi
date in response to the request of the
city's business interests. His oppon
ent ascertained that he had declined
to support Bryan and had warmly in
dorsed McKinley. This aroused such
a storm among the "regular" people
that Mr. Gordon is out in a letter an
nouncing his withdrawal and express
ing pleasure at being relieved from
what he only undertook as a patriotic
duty.

A Queer Notion.
Mr. C. M. Strader, a Keutuckian,
before dying in Philadelphia the other
day, dictated a will requiring his body
to be cremated, the ashes taken to
Loufsville and "scattered on the
waves of the beautiful Ohio." He
concluded: "When this is done, if
the angel Gabriel can collect my re
mains for the judgment, I will take
otf my hat to him, and will be there
at the last roll call." The instruc
tions have been carried out.
