m . , Jfce Pagelaud Journal Published Wednesday Mornings l>y the Journal Company $ 1.00. ' For months the government through the papers asked the people to save flour and not store H away. Pleading did not avail, and now your Uncle has had somewhat to say that has caused us to take notice. We are still asked to save, especially wheat, meat and sugar, but if a tendency to disregard these in structions is manifested it is on ]y a question < f time until we shall hove tlu so things dished out to us in small quantities only. It is fat better to heed now ihan to he forrrd later. ... ??A And so the fellow who always thinks so intently upon his own comfort that all neighborly in t( rest in his fellowmun is excluded is row going to bring back the eight or ten sacks of flour he has stored away for his own use. Tie thought there might not be enough for all tin til harvest, so he would buy up a supply and make 'lis own bis cuit sure, whether others had bread or not. lie has shown himself to be very fiioughtless or selfish, and our Uncle Sam has found it necessary to teadh him a little etiquette. FordTS,W Submarine FightW era at Detroit ' Washington, Jan. 31.?New submarine fighters of a powerful type are about to be turned out into the United States vfj large numbers. After testifying today before the hous^ naval committee on the naval' a&fo priation bill Secretary D #els authorized the statement? #that contracts for "several Jss" of the new craft have bred'fjMaced ...ial t? 1 *r ? - / yvuu me roru lvioicyr Ksmpany of Detroit. He desfcriKl them as half way between a/uestroyer and submarine cbfasaf' 200 feet long and equipraedJwith latest discoveries for; tufjnating sub marines. All parts of ships except the engines ate to be fabricated in Detroit and the parts shipped to seaboard, where thev will be as sembled. Changes in the Ford p!ant to permit the handling ot the work have progressed so swiftly, Mr. Daniels said, that the deliveries during the coming summor are assured. The new vessels are expected to prove far superior to the chasers now in use. They will nave steam power wim a greater radius ol action, will be more seaworthy and will be able to carry heavier armament. It has developed that the latest German submarines are equipped with guns which outrange those of, small chasers and even some merchant ships. Henry Ford, . president and principal owner of the Ford Company, recently placed before Secretary Daniels plans showing the practicability Of converting a large s part of his factory into a ship fabricating plant. Naval constructors had evolved the latest submarine chaser and Hear Admiral Dauid W. Secretary Daniels said the na/v now has 95,000 men under nstruclion and, with the recomnended increase, will have men mcugh to supply crews notony for the entire naval construe ion program as now contem)l?ted, but also for the hundreds >1 merchant ships which are to jo placed under his supervision. John Left the Burning Ford | While John R. Green was touring gasoline in a Ford by un'ein light Sunday night the :as caught fire and for a while lie section of town south of the aw road was liglited up just bout as well as an up-to-date let trie plant could do the job. The fire alarm was given by eighbors who felt sure that Mr. ?. D. Moore's residence, where lie automobile was standing, vas on fire. However, when he tire fighting brigade assemb ed thev were agreeably disappointed to learn fiat the only vis ble damage was a Ford with top ind seats in a burnt and charred ondition, which was the extent >1 the damage, unless Johnnie inured his wina running when he gasoline covered his feet and et fire to that part of his anatoiy that took him a way from thel anger with as much speed as if nest of bumble bees had set l^n on his person and pushed.
