t d^KnHr Submarine Fighl*
era at Detroit
' Washington, Jan. 31.?New
submarine fighters of a powerful
type are about to be turned/
out into the United States it'
large numbers. After testifying
today before the house^ naval
committee on the naval^a^Ao
priation bill Secretary T Ae\s
authorized the statemex?^that
contracts for "several i's(sMs" ot
the new craft have be^v^laced
with the Ford Motor pWmpany
of Detroit. He desfcrirfd them
as half way between a aestroyer
and submarine cMaser* 200 feet
lorn; and equipped with latest
discoveries for Ajrnbating sub
marines.
All parts of ships except the
engines are to be fabricated in
Detroit and the parts shipped to
seaboard, where thev will be as
sembled. Changes in the Ford
p'.ant to permit the handling ot
the work have progressed so
swiftly, Mr. Daniels said, that
llto (litl f tTi.rinO Hnrionr tU/A

suminor are assured.
The new vessels are expected
to prove far superior to the chasers
now in use. They will
have steam power with a greater
radius ol action, will be more
seaworthy and will be able to
carry heavier armament. It has
developed that the latest German
submarines are equipped
with guns whicb outrange those
oi small chasers and even some
merchant ships.
Henry Ford, president and
principal owner of the Ford
Company, recently placed before
Secretary Daniels plans
showing the practicability of
converting a large part of his
factory into a ship fabricating
plant. Naval constructors had

argement of several existing
raining stations, Plans already
rave been approved for enlarging
the Pelham Bay (N. Y.) and
Norfolk (Va.) stations. Five j
housand men no v are at Bel- i
1am Bay and 16,000 at Norfolk.
Secretary Daniels said the na- *
v now has 95,000 men under
iistruclion and, with the recommended
increase, will have men
nough to supply crews not on- '
y for the entire naval construe *
ion program as now contem- '
ktted, but also for the hundreds ';
1 merchant ships which are to
e placed under his supervision.
