Jackson the other day, told of
the escape of a Frdnch aviator
from a German prison and his
subsequent work as instructor
at i*ort Oglethorpe* where Mr.
Red fear n was in training
This dating young officer was
captured twice by the Germans.
He escaped once and went hack
into the service of his country,
only* to be captured a second
time. He was an expert in
aviation, and naturally the
, . Gerfnans put him to work
around an airplane base. One
day a German officer from a

service, came along and desired
to be carried across coun'tr* to
another point. He turned to
the French prisoner and asked
him if he could manage one ol
the machines. v'4Yes, sir, I can
operate any of them," he replied.
He was then ordered to
get readv, He buckled himself
in, the officer mounted and
tbev were off. When they were
< some distance away, the aviator
turned his machine upward and
^ beiran to go up rabidly. The
% officer saw mischief in the fellow's
acts and ordered him to
resume their course, hut no heed
was given. The machine continued
to mount higher and
higher.- The coltl barrel of a
huge pistol was thrust against
the flyer's head, and the com
rnard was again given to return
to J their course, or his brains
would be blown out. Then he
said, "Shoot," and continued to
go up. The officer alternately

tion. Johansen, Mr. Burchall,
said, had been living in the
United States ten years, and as

old home in Norway he shipped
