It is stated that Mr. Buck
1 Brewer saw his neighbor with a
package the other day that he
r thought was a pound of cheese
v and that he went home with
him to help devour the cheese.
1 To his astonishment an axe
;? was seen when the paper was
removed, and Mr. Brewer stated
_ immediately that he must be on
p his way home.
\ Dr. John Blair of Monroe was
t born near White Plains in this
\ county and manv people down
t here know him. He Is some1
what enfeebled in body, due to
1 a stroke of paralysis, but his
t mind is active. He has a reI
markable memory, and a love
\ for human association. Proba1
bly he knows more people in
\ Union county than any other
t man. He knows every main
\ road in the county, and can al\
most tell who lives in every
1 house one would pass on a trip
P through the county. Without
l fear of contradiction we will say
1 that he knows where more ol
p Union's citizens live than any
p other man, dead or alive. We
1 never knew him personally un
| lil about five months ago, and
* were therefore surprised to find
that Doc knew more about oui
3 people and ancestry than we
3 knew.
3 We heard him spin "yarns*1
3 and relate local history for three
a or four days, and during the
3 time we learned much but said
3 little, as there seemed little op
a portunity. Most of his jokes
a and stories were about other
3 people, however, and we believe
3 now that he purposely held back
a the one about the goat he tied tc
3 the bell cord. When he was a
a boy along with R. L. Stevens
a and others he was as near all
a bov as a mule is all mule. With
a another boy or two he planned
a to have some fun, and had it,
a They carried an old William
3 goat into the court house, fed
3 him some fodder to keep him
3 still a lew minutes. Then thev
J tied the bell cord to the goat,
- and skeedaddled. In a very
short time the court bell began
a noisy clang, clang, and the
l i
wnoie Town was in a state of excitement
because of the untimely
ringing of the bell. Dire
vengeance was sworn against
the unknown culprits, but to
this day Doc John has not suffered
for this piece of deviltry.
An amorous British youth
was being taken to task for his
flirtations. ''Engaged to four
girls at once!' "How do you
explain such shameless conduct?"
"1 don't know," said the
graceless nephew. "C u p i d
must have shot me with a
midline gun."
