It \ roe Paqeland Jonrnal October 31, 1917 Local News j L * ! Mr. Willie N. Knight, a member of Co. M. now stationed at Greenville, spent five days last week in this section with rela ti ves. Ii Mrs. Catherine Hasty of Cam den is spending: the week at the kome of her brother, Mr. Joe Railings. I Mrs, J. C. Parker returned Monday from Seneca, S. C., where she visited relatives for several days. From all sides have come expressions of sympathy because of the fire, all of which we appreciate. Misses Wincie Sanders and pia Horn leave todav to cccept positions with the Southern pell telephone Co. in Columbia. Messrs. S. B. Eubanks and O. L. Smith have the contract to repair the damage done to the Journal building by the fire Friday morning. Lumber is being placed, and the work has already started. This issue of the Journal is printed under very unfavorable circumstances, and doubtless there will be mistakes. There is a great mass of stuff we would like to print, but can not. If this issue doesn't suit you, just remember the circumstances. Mr. H. B. Sowell is preparing to erect brick buildings on Pearl street where the wood ones .were burned Friday morning. He contemplates erecting a room for a barber shop, one for the post office and a large L shaped > one for a garage. The news has reached Page land of the marriage on Septem ber 25th of Mr. William A. Kirkley, who has been in the navy for about three years, to Miss Stella Rinise of Bridgeport, Conn, at the Methodist parson age in Bri geport. Mr. Kirkley is a son of Mr. R. K. Kirkley who lives a mile or two southwest ot Pagelanri. He is a printer of the U. S. ship Alabama, rnd his addeiess is New York. Mrs. Kirkley will reside in Bridgeport, and Mr. Kirkley will be on his ship most of his time. He writes that he and his wife will probably come back to Chesterfield county after his term in the navy expires. The absence of any fire fight ing apparatus Friday morning caused quite a little talk as to possible ways cf acquiring something to aid in lire fighting. Water works was mentioned, but prices are too high. Then it was decided by several men that, under the present conditions, the best thing to be done is to purchase a supply of hose and two or three large force pumbs and plenty of ladders, hooks, etc. It is said that one end of a hose may be dropped into a well and a stream of water thrown to a considerable beighth by these force pumps. Mr. S. B Eubanks canvassed for funds and it now seems that ill 8 equipment may soon be had here. Bert Streater 1 Iurst, the 14 year-bid son of Mr. John T. Hurst of Chesterfield was killed Monday afternoon about 3 o'clock when the Ford he was driving turned over near Hopewell church between Ruby and Chesterfield. He and his two small sisters, Ruth and May, and Frank Jackson, another boy about 13 years old, were on the read from Cbes.erfieid to Ruby when the fatal accident accident occurred. It is said that the car was being driven very rapidly and that when it struck a deep sand bed it turned completely over, crushing the life out of the boy driver. His head was crushed in and his abdomen perforated. The other occupants " were right badly jarred and bruised, but none appeared to be seriously hurt. Brazil Decrees State of War With Germany Rio Janeiro, Oct. 26.?The chamber of deputies today, by an almost unanimous vote, declared that a state of war existed between Germany and Brazil. The vote was 149 to 1. The tribunes were filled to capacity. Alter a debate on the opportune necessity of proclaiming martial law, the president of the diplomatic commission spoke in favor of a law worded as follows: "A state of war between Brazil and Germany is hereby acknowledged and proclaimed. The president of the Republic is authorized to adopt the measures enunciatedi n his message of the 2F>th of October, and to take all steps tending to ensure national defense apd public security." The virtually unanimous vote of the deputies was received with general acclamation. The senate unanimously approved the proclamation of a state of war with Germany, President Braz has sanctioned the proclamation of a state of war with Germany. According to the newsnnnors torpedo boat destroyers have re ceived orders to Bagia and take possession of the German gunboat Eber, which has been lving there for some time.
