Iron Studded Maces
In the course of a dispatch
from Udine giving in some de
tail the booty captured by the
Italians in their victorious ad
vance occurs the item "iron stud
ded maces for dispatching the
wounded." This item is not
emphacized in any way as if to
heighten effect or as if seeking
to insinuate a fresh impression
of enemy cruelty.
But the moment one begins to
weigh the matter, there comes
to mind the only too well au
thenticated details of Servian
. sufferings at the hands of Austrian
victors, who are deliberately
pursuing a policy aimed at
depopulation of the country by
degrees?the sending of Servian
girls to Turkish harems by
thousands, the mock trial and
instant execution of Serb men
and even boys for assumed offenses,
the deportation of others
to be quickly worked to death,
the rapidly progressive confiscation
of everything useful, though

taken from a people having little

The statement of von Bissing,
German governor of Belgium
for two years, that Belgium
should be rapidly depopulated
and the vacancy filled with Germans,
so that even though Belgium
should regain formal inde
pendence, she would be Ger
manized past recall, comes to
mind. The shamelessly confessed
policy of torpedoing hospital
ships and the actual bombing of
hospitals in France are remembered.
The deportation of Belgian
workmen to be returned, so
far as they survived at all, in
trainloads of broken dvipg men
and the fate accorded to thousands
of the french population
caught behind the German lines
across Northern France yield
accumulated evidence. Then
not the "iron studded maces for
dispatching the wounded?" If
it should be tomahawks and
scalping knives next, what of
