September 5, 1917 f ? 1 - ? i The dispatches yesterday carried news of the evacuation of ( Riga, the great Russian port on 1 the Gulf of Riga, by the Russians as the Germans, following up i their gains of Saturday, advanced * upon the city. Some of the ^ troops fell back without resistance, while others fought as long ] as there was hope. Military critics differ as to the importance 1 of this great port to the Germans It opens the way to Petrograd, the Russian capital, but there , are many who believe that for even the capital itself to fall into the hands of the Germans would only serve to hinder the effectiveness of the military opera tions of the German armies, as troops stationed there would soon find themselves ice bound far from a base of suoplies. On the other hand the Germans will whoop up the people at home with great stories of victory and thus lend credence to the oft repeated assertions of certain victory. This would probably have the effect of causing the people to throw themselves into the fight with a new determination to win. We are inclined to take an optimistic view, believ ing that the farther into bleak northern Russia the Germans /Jo the smaller their chance of with standing the allied armies in the west. ^ A prominent farmer who lives on Route One was in the office 3 esterday morning. While here he asked us to write something about the importance of farmers naming their farms and using printed stationery. Well, so much has been written about this that there is probably little that can be said without repeti tion. A sleepv farmer seldom ! names his farm. It is not neces sary that a farm be large and I cultivated by scores of hands, 1 but the small, well ordered farm 5 is just as worthy of a name as the largest one. Our advice would be name your farm, have I stationery printed by your local t printers, and then make your farm worthy of the name. Delivered to the Enemy Riga, the naval base of the Russians, has been delivered over to Germany. It had been a foregone conclusion that such an eventuality was impending and the Russian Government must have been making ample preparation for the surrender of the place, knowing as it did that the Russians entrusted with the task of defending the base would give way without a fight. It may be contended by the mili tary critics that the capture of this stronghold isot no meterial ffinspmipnrp tn iho f/\r?nn..c ?ivf iiiv iuiiuiavo ui | the Allies, but the effect on the | German people will be electrical. It will be heralded as a great German victory and will serve to revive the courage of both people and soldiers. The place had been finely positioned for defence and if there had been any fight at all in the Russians they could have held it secure against successful assault ? Charlotte Observer. Miss Mollie Poston, Misses Zula and Nell Ingram have returned to their home at Kershaw, after spending some time here as the guest ot their uncle, Dr. I ngram. Miss Mollie Poston and her guest. Miss Estelle Black well of Jefferson, visited friends in Kershaw last Wednesday. Mr. Herbert Sanders of Hartsville. spent Sunday in town. MT.OROCHAN LOCALS Born to Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Ratliff, August, 28th a son. I haven't learned his name yet. A pair of mules ran awav with Mr. Charlie Rayfield last Wednesday afternoon and threw him out of the wagon, breaking both bones of the right leg just above the ankle. Dr. I. S. Funderburk set the bones, and he is resting as well as could be expected. The ice cream supper at the school house last Wednesday night for benefit of new Baptist church was well attended and a nice little sum was raised Master Lee Burch entered school at Mars. Hill last week. Sunday school at Methodisl church Sunday at 2:30. Preaching af 3:30. Mrs. I S. Funderburk has been sick for a week. She was able to sit up Sunday. Mr. Rufus Nicholson, son of Mr. Doc Nicholson, will leave the 15th of September to stand his final examination for the war. His brother, Julius is already in France. Uncle Billie Hilton said they have all of his boys, and that he wants to go as he can fight as well as the boys. Mr. John Moore left a stalk of corn in the drug store last week sphigh that he could not reach the top ear, and he is six and a half feet high. This corn was Sjrown in Chesterfield county, and not in Buford township. Mr. John F. Horn returned from a Charlotte hospital Saturday. He was operated on for abscess He was able to be at Mt.
