A good many farmers in this

Last spring farmers had trou

rather late but they have been
catching up for several days, and
are now in fairly good shape.
Down at Patrick they made a
grave on the 25th of April to
the memory of Old Booze. The
grave was made near the depot
in the middle of the street. At
the head and foot were empty
liquor cartoons, and on the grave
was a jug filled with flowers,

were written, such as:
"At Rest," "Goodby Old Headache."
Mr. G. H. Gulledge, township
commissioner for Mt. Croghan
township, while here the other
day stated that a new public
road has been staked out from

a distance of about 6 miles.
He expects the gang to put this
road in shape. He stated also,
that there are more miles ol
public roads in Mt. Croghan
township than' in any other
township in the county. He
asks the co operation of the people
in keeping up these roads.
The recitation and declama
tion contests for the schools of
this county were held in the

Friday night. Miss Kuby Quick
of Pageland won in the reciter's
contest, and Mr. Marion Smith
of Kuby won in the declaimer's
contest. Those who spoke
were: Reuben Outen, Pageland;
Paul Baker, Mt. Croghan;
Marion Smith, Ruby; Jerome
Douglass, Chesterfield; Miss
Violet Welsh, Chesterfield; Miss
Alva Ratliff, Mt. Croghan;
Miss Ruby Quick, Pageland.
Mr. L. L. Parker has purchas
ed a fine Guernsey bull from a
Mr. J. C. Austin at Marshville. t
He is about two years old and s<
weighs one thousand pounds.
This is in line with the action of y
other hankers in the State in
purchasing improved breeds of J
cattle for distribution among
their customers. For the pres y
ent this bull will be located on y
his farm and the service fee will
be reasonable

The Jefferson oil mill- was
destroyed by~ fire Monday night c
during the thunderstorm which
visited this section. The oil s
mill and fertilizer house were 1
burred, but the gin house, boiler
room and seed houses were not
burned. A quanity of meal was
burned. The loss was estimat
ed at about $15,000, with $6,200
insurance. The night watch
man saw the fire before it gained
much headway, but was unable
to put it out. It is supposed
that lightning fired the building.
The mill belonged to Messrs.
Amos Mungo, H. Miller, James
Miller, L. D. Ogburn and G. W.
Sutton since the recent sale of
the plant and the reorganization.
China Expected To Enter Strife
Peking, April 29.?A declaration
of war against Germany
by China is expected within a
fortnight.

question will go before parlia- J
ment shortly.
The American minister, Dr.

Paul Reinsch, held a reception
at the legation today to 20 pro j
visional military conference
which recommended recently j
that China declare war. The
Governors were received with
full military honors by the legation
guard and were welcomed
by Dr. Reinsch and promi
nent members of the American ]
colony. The minister made an
address congratulating the governors
on evidence of cooperation
in all parts of China, and
assured them that they had the
best wishes of the United States.

Banks Will Help
The president of The Federal
Land Bank of Columbia has requested
the officers of the state and
national banks to assist the
farmers in organizing and perfecting
local associations. He t]

ing war times would do well to u
organize promptly and prepare n
to increase the productivity of ^
their farms. The Bank of Page
land and the Jefferson Bank will
be glad to perform such service
for their customers, and all who
desire farm loans should report ti
