He says it grew in his garden. Mr. T. E. Cato has moved his . stock of merchandise into the roonv adjoining his former stand whicb was formerly occupied by Pageland Buggy & Wagon Co. Rev. J. W. Elkins thinks the mbvement by the Seaboard to get more melons crown in this section means that the new road from McBee to Monroe is soon to be built. What do you think? Mr. R. H. Mills pulled a horse apple. from a tree on his farm three miles east of Pageland on the first day of January and presented it to the writer. It was disposed of in the usual way. Mr. W. T. McGuirt is opening up a line of groceries in the building recently vacated by Mr. D. E. Clark. The store will be- ' long to Mr. G. E, Plummer, of i Darlington, but Mr. McGuirt 1 will he manager. Mr. W. J. Blakegey purchased a part of the grocery stock ot the Pageland Mercantile compa 1 nv and is opening up a grocery store in his building on the ^ North side of. McGregor street recently vacated by Mr. R. L. Smith. Messrs. M. L. Davis and H. W. Funderburk have purchased the line of goods in the dry goods department of the Pageland Mer cantile Co. and have moved into the wood building at the rear of < the Mercantile building. This < line consists of shoes, clothing, dry goods, hats, notions, etc. 1 Mr. J. E. King expects to move his family to Oak Park, Emman uel county, Ga. within a few ! days. He owns a house and lot . in Oak Park and a farm jujt out side the limits of the town. Mr. ! Turner made application for aid for j Mrs. Kate Mangum, the aged ] widow of the late Mr. Wm. { Mangum, and was just a little ( surprised to receive a check for $120 in time to present it to this ] good woman as a Christmas { present. I Mr. Reid Elkins of Hampton, I S. C. was struck in the leg by a stray pistol ball as he was turning a corner on his way from his office to his boarding house j one evening during the holidays. Latest reports from him are that , he is recovering nicely, but that the ball *s thought to be in the i large bone of tlie right leg just below the calf which means that j an X ray will be necessary to lo- { cate it. Mr. Elkins is a son of | - Rev. and Mrs J. W. Elkins of , Pageland, and he intended leav ( ing the day after the accident to , spend the holidays with his par | ents. Rutledge left this morning} for Columbia. Mrs. Funderburk will remain there for several days looking after her property. . The minutes of the Chester field Baptist association are readv for delivery from this of fice. The clerks or members of the following churches a?5 asked to call and get them: Dudley, Providence, Wolf Pond, Plains, Center Grove, Bethlehem. Chas. Blair, an aged! negro who was raised in this section, died at Monroe Sunday and was buried at Salem Monday, He was a darkey of the old school, honest and well liked by the white people. He had lived with Dr. John Blair [at Monroe for twenty years or] more. Mr. E. M. Railings was very painfully hurt Sunday ^afternoon when his pony dashed off. He was standing i between the wbeelsgof his buggy and was caught and dragged] for several yards. The ! accident occurred on Mr. Railings' farm 2 miles from 'Pageland. A Baptist church is to be erected within a few days at the forks ot the road at the ?vans grave yard 2 1-2 miles west of Pageland. Rev. R. W. Cato is at the head of the movement, and he expects to see the orgamzBtibif perfected in the new building on the third Sunday in this month at 11 o'clock.* Mr. John Knight Dead McBee, January 8.?The intire community was grieved to hear of the death of Mr, John Knight which occurred at his home tour miles from McBee in the r>_ J . rruviuence secuon, on Saturday night, December 30th, after an illness ot some weeks. Mr. Knight was an old soldier. He belonged to company A. 7th S C. Battalion. Mr. Knight has been a consistent member of the Baptist church since early bovlood. He was one of the oldest ind most respected 'men in this community. He was laid to est in the family cemetery at 1 o'clock Monday afternoon, fanuary 1st. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. J. C. Lawson of McBee. Mr Knight left a wife and the following children: Mr. Dove Knight and Mrs. Nannie Horton if Louisiana; Mrs. Frank Hough if Georgia; Mrs. Ed Davis of Kershaw; Mrs. C, IK. So well and Mrs. Ervin Horton of McBee, ind a hosts of the relatives and friends to each of these we extend our deepest sympaty. Hornsboro Dots. 1 will attempt to give you a few dots from this burg.
