Turner killed a "Die" ' last week which netted 475 pounds in the presence of witnesses. Mrs. E. J. Bivens, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Griffin, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Lee of Monroe visited at Mr. T. W. Gregory's Sunday. Mr. Hazel Laney who is In school at Charlotte came home for Thanksgiving and remained until Sunday. Mrs. Ed Taylor of Lanes Creek township was carried to a Charlotte hospital Monday for an operation, but the opperation was postponed. Mrs. 0. C. Curlee and son, OC. Jr. of Monroe visited at tne home of the former's brother, Mr. S. H. Laney, from Thursday until Sunday. Mr. S. W. Preslar writes from Concord, N. C. that he is there opening up a jewelry store. Redfearn will remain ( a few .days longer. * Mr. Dowd Sikes of Hornsboro \ was operated on for appendicitis at Miss Alice Threatt's hospital , here Sunday afternoon by Dr. " R. L. Blackwell, Graves, Kirkley 1 and Blakeney, will be home to morrow atternoon or Friday. j Miss Bess Austin of Monroe * died in a hospital in ' Charlotte v Sunday afternoon 1 where she had gone for an oper 1 ation. Miss Austin was a sister ( of Mrs. T. P. Smith of Marsh 5 ville, and was known here, ( Her friends regret very much 1 hei sad death. She had been 1 sick tor several months, and had 1 spent much time in hospitals, 1 The bodv was brought back to 1 Monroe for burial. I Rev. A. J. Crane has resigned | his work as pastor of the Presby ) terian churches at Marsh ville, < Beulah, Salem and Pageland, and has accepted a position as superintendent of home missions and evangelist in the Alhe ' marie Presbytery, which com- 1 prises about one-fifth of the State 1 of North Carolina, lying in the northeastern part of the State. * Mr. Crane will hold the same ' position in that Presbytery as ( Mr. Gill holds in the Mecklen- ' burg Presbytery, f lis home will 1 beatTarboro. He will be nnid 1 a salary from the general home * mission treasury of the Presby ( terian church in that State and } will likely be furnished an auto- 1 mobile. There will be an oyster sup3?r at the Mangum school house lext Wednesday night. Proseeds go to school. Mr. J. D. Hendrix has moved tiis family from near Raeford, N. C. to the farm he recently purchased four miles east of Pageland. ^ Master Keith Baucom, son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Baucom of Lanes Creek township, suffered i broken arm while playing at school one day last week. Master Franklin Burch, son of Mr. T. H. Burch of Ruby, had in eye badly hurt by a firecracker Monday, but it is hoped hat the eye may be saved. Mr. Eugene Webb and Miss Nora Smith were married at the aome of the bride's parents Mr. md Mrs. R. Lee Smith, in Lanes IDreek township yesterday afterloon. Mr. Webb is an enterprising young farmer. Mrs. Webb is a young ladv of fine character. She has taught in the schools of Union county, md is well liked as teacher and is a lady. Mr. Albert E. Robinson, a brother of Mr. A. C. Robinson Df Pageland, died at the home of tiis sister, Mrs. V. A. Coan at Mineral Springs last Tuesday aight. He was about 35 years Did and had been in bad health for several months. Pellacra was the cause of bis death. He was buried Wednesday at Waxlaw cemetery, funeral services :>eing conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. W. Sanford. ^Three jmall children survive. His wife, who was Miss Mattie Carter of Waxhaw died last year. Mr. C. Columbus Clark and Sirs. Virginia Addie Pigg were narried last Wednesday night at he home of Rev R. W. Cato, he officiating minister, a mile )nly a few relatives and friends. \fter the ceremony they went o the home of Mr. and Mrs, J. Mangum, where a bounteous lupper was served. She is a ady of excellent character, well iked and respected by her wide lircle of friends. Mr. and Mrs. Zllark have the best wishes of a jreat number of friends and elatives. The birds are he farmer's friends, and signing his agreement is an evidence hat vou are willing to protect he friends. NYE, Blakeney Hotel. DUDLEY NEWS The box supper last Thursday night was a grand success. The proceeds amounted to $15.40, which goes to the furnishing of the library. Mr. Roy Funderburk, a student in Wingate High school, spent Thanksgiving at home. Mrs. John West who recently underwent an operation in a Charlotte hospital, is improving rapidly and will be home in a few days. Mr. and Mrs. U. A., Maud and Preston Funderburk and Miss Zudie Jenkins went to a reunion at Mr. Calvin Smith's near Philadelphia last Thursday. Miss Marietta Plyler will leave this week to spend some time with her brother, Mr. Bethel Plyler at Cross Hill. Wade Funderburk, son of Mr. H. J. Funderburk went to Charlotte last Friday and had his tonsils taken out. Mr. Leon B. Funderburk, who is teaching: at Deep Creek spent Thanksgiving at home. Little Ruth Funderburk who has had a severe case of diphtheria is improving nicely. Miss Nell Funderbu k of Pageland spent the week end with relafiv^ in thisrorrurnmrfv? M. V. F. Edward's mother went to the window, when she overheard a heated discussion going on below. "But I sha'n't mind going to heaven the least bit," declared Jean. "They have awful good things to eat, preserves, and things like that" "Whv they don't eat at all," said Edward stoutly. "Wherever did you get that silly idea?" "They do," asserted Jean, "it says in my catechism, 'The Lord makes, preserves, and keeps us,' so there!" My four-year-old son, who has recently come into possession of a small pocket flashlight, and whose little mind has since been largely taken up with its construction and equipment, was overheard discussing family mat ters with his little sister, a year younger. 4,I don't know what's the matter with papa," said sis ter. "He frowns so much and never laughs anv more," "Well, sister," was the reply, "maybe his laugh battery is broken." Little Walter, whose mother raised a great many flowers, went walking with her one day. They discovered a hen sitting in some bushes where she had stolon her nest.
