The Pageland Journal Published Wednesday Mornings , by The Journal Company j C. M. Tucker, Editor 1 s Subscription Price - - $1.00 j Entered as second class mail ' matter at the post otfice at Page- 1 land, S. C., under Postal Act 1 of March 3, 1879. s November 15, 1916 < , A Thanksgiving proclamation should be easy to write after 1 such a signal victory over the 1 Big Interests. ? The first woman ever elected to the United States congress was elected by the Republicans in Montana in the election last week. Her name is Miss Jeannette Rankin. - ? In last week's election the South and West united for the first time and elected a Demo- -j cratic president in spite of New J York, Philadelphia, Chicago and the other big Republican strongholds in the east. Wilson will be the first Democratic president J since the war 10 succeed himself. ^ The Republicans warn the * Democrats that tlie official j count in some of the close States j may change the results, to which , the replv is made that it is best j to have the fun now, for if Wil- ^ son is declared elected all will be well and if Hughes should be named in the final count the * Democrats will have had all the * fun they would get in four years. I ? ? J Mr. Hughes' wife and daugh ters accepted the premature an- , nouncements that Hughes was elected and congratulated hubby ,i?.iJ.. ? i 1 - ? * ' auu uauuy uu 1115 election Deiore the voting: in California, Wash- I ingfton and Oreg;on was hardly s over. We don't know what 1 Jhey said when the tide tunj^ t and carried Mr. Hug[hes out to i sea, but we can imagine their i feeling;s. Very few people in this section know there is a real canning; factory in this countv. Such is the case, however, and ' it is equipped with modern ma chines which can without solder or acid, the covers being; crimped on somewhat like a soda s water bottle cap. This factory ^ Viae a A - iiuo a v.a^acu y Ul SCVeillV CUI1S 3 minute. It has been in operation since last spring at Mon- ' trose in the lower part of the county. Mr. H. V. Shroyer, an experienced packer from the I Middle West is manager of the factory. All kinds of fruits and I vegetables are canned. The i factory contracts with, farmers < of the county to grow a certain J number of acres of vegetables at 1 a given price. Vegetables are t bought also where no contract J has been made. This is an industry which has been neglected for a long time in this State, and it is with pleasure that we note the operation of this plant' in Chesterfield county. May there soon be others N. C. May Still Have Republican Congerssman Asheville, Nov. 11.?The com plex situation in fhe Tenth Congressional district, wherein Con gressman James J. Britt, Republican, and Zebulon Weaver, Democrat, are both claming election, is unchanged, and will remain so until nexi Thursday when the Buncombe board of canvassers will meet after adjourning today without certifying the returns of Tuesday's election in tllic r-r?nntw ' The official returns of the dis trict give Congressman Britt a majority of thirteen votes, but } the Democratic managers assert i that a recount of the ballois in i this county, and in others of the ' district, will give Mr. Weaver a majority. | Honor Roll Below is given a list of those who have paid during the past few days This is bv no means all who paid in advance, ind does not include any except , those who have paid during this j time. An Oakland botanist was pac ing studiously over the South Hills. His eyes roamed from side to side for new plants. Suddenly an eager look registered in his features. He leaned over the fence inclosing a garden. He had found a plant he did not know. What could it be? If only he had a specimen of it to study! A youth strolled along, and stopped to gaze open-mouthed at him. "I say," called the bot anist urgently. "See that plant there?that pale pink one in the corner?" Do you know it?" "Yep," said the youth briefly. "What's its name? Do you know what family it belongs to?" The youth's thumb made a gesture over his shoulder to ward the house as he spoke : again briefly: "H igginses."?Exchange.
