The visitor to a country farm
was being shown round the
premises by his host, says the
New York Times. Thev in
spected the hennery, the piggery,
the cowery, the horsery and all
the other "eries," and the city
man was very much interested.
Presently, as they walked
along the side of a field, he
touched his companion on the
arm.
"There!" he exclaimed auickly.
"Is that scarecrow?"
"Where?" asked the farmer.
"That shabby thing in the
middle of the field. It must be
a scarecrow. It hasn't moved
all the time I've been watching."
"That's no scarecrow," replied
the farmer sadly. "Thai's
a man I've got hired working
by the day."
"Say, doc," said a small boy
as he entered the physician's office,
"I got measles. Nobody
else knows and I'll keep it quite."

Finally the boy got impatient
and said:
"Aw, get wise. What will yer
give me to go to school and
spread it among the kids?"

A gentleman from Vermont
was traveling west in a Pullman
when a group of men from Topeka,
Kansas, boarded the train
and began to praise their city to
the Vermonter, telling him of its
wide streets and beautiful avenues.
Finally the Vermonter
became tired and said the only
thing that would improve their
citv would be to make it a seaport,
The enthusiastic Westerners
laughed at him and asked how
they could make it a seaport,
being so far from the ocean.
The Vermonter replied that it
would be a very easy task.
"The only thing that you will
have to do," said he, "is to lay a
two-inch pipe^from your city to
the Gulf of Mexico. Then if you
fellows can suck as hard as you
can blow you will have it a seaport
inside half an hour."
It was a dull day on the
wharves, and a bunch of negro
stevedores had gathered and
were discussing a pail of beer.
After a while the talk turned on
one of their fellow workers, who
had been shot at the night before.
A strange negro who had
drifted in asked:
"Did dat nigger run?"
"Run?" replied a witness.
"Run? Why, ef dat nigger had V
had jest one feather in his han'
he'd 'a' flew!"
Jimmie was going: out with
his mother one afternoon and
had been sent upstairs to get
ready. After a long wait the
mother called up the stairs:
"Hurry down, Jimmie, we're
late now. Have you got your
shoes on yet?"
"Yes," replied the boy, "all
but one."
