The subject of this sketch was
born in Chesterfield county
April 20,1857, and departed this
life August 15, 1916. being therefore

there is no one more familar with
her sterling qualities as a woman
than the writer, and while I
have only known her for about
five years, still I have known

Evidence was clear that she
had severely beaten the child,
..bout nine years of age, who
vas in court to exhibit his battered
person.
Before imposing sentence, His
i lonor asked the woman whether
she had any thing to say.
"Kin Ah ask yo' jes' one ques
iou, jedge?" inquired the prison
er.
The judge nodded affirmative
iy.
"Well, Yo' Honah, Ah'd like
to ask whether yo* was ever the
parent of a puffectly wuthless
cullud chile?"
After suffering a lone time
with toothache, Aunt Dioah
mustered up enough courage to
go to a dentist. The moment he
touched the tooth she began to
scream.
"Look here," he said, "you
mustn't yell like that. Don't
