The Pageland Journal Published Wednesday Mornings by The Journal Company ( C. M. Tucker, Editor Subscription Price - - $1.00 ( Entered as second class mail 1 matter at the post oifice at Pagelaud, S. C., under Postal Act ! of March 3, 1879. 1 August 9, 1916 Announcement Demonstration Agent Tiller has agreed to conduct a department in this paper for the farm- i ers: The selection and preparation ; of the matter for this department will be entirely with Mr, Tiller and Miss Mims, the home dem- < onstration worker. This depart- < ment will start next week, and continue as long as it seems ad- 1 visable! Many farmers in this county ( nre growing velvet beans in a i limited way for the first time this year. Some of them will j not grow them again because ihe corn is being wrapped up so that no fodder can be pulled. < 1'odder pulling is still considered ( profitable by a great many peo- j pie. ^ The county campaign opened > up in full blast at Brock's mill 1 yesterday. There is an unusual ly large number of candidates J tliis year, and the campaign promises to be an interesting c he, though it will be a little I tiresome if all the candidates in s st upon their right to speak. I The race for sheriff has been C hardest fought, perhaps, up to this time, but the race for superi itendent of education and that 1 tor representative will probably hold more attention in the cam paign. ^ The,recent rainy weather em- ( I liasized anew the need for keep- s i g plenty of humus or vegeta l b!e matter in all farming lands, i C otton on clean sandy land al- t uiuai uicu, aim 11 iins me puurcsi j c .nee at all to make enough to 3 p iy for the fertilizer, while cot- < t >q on humus-filled land has t v ithstood the rains and is thriv- ( in v. Tiller is making a big ef- ? fort to induce all Chesterfield ] c unty farmers to sow cover g crops for the winter. Tiller ( c n't afford to lie about the ben- j eiits of these crops of clover, $ ry 5 and vetch, and his advice ? doesn't cost anything. I'alk it i o\er with him, and then go t aluad. 1 Chas. E. Hughes, the Republi- J n? * * " J -* * v_ 11 t tauuiuiiic iui presiueni, > m de his speech of acceptance a i ft- v days ago, and it was a won- < dcr. He has been loosing i g >und faster since he made it ih n before. He criticised Fres J id nt Wilson verv severely and s m de it clear that nothing had 1 be ;n done right since the Dem- 1 ocrats came to the wheel. He 1 Sfi'J it was all wrong, but he ni elected to say how it could be s ri, hted. Considering the fact J th it he had nothing to work upon, he probably did very well * ?\ ih his generalities. This lovely girl was stricken with a violent disease that no earthly power could arrest and after a few weeks drifted to the life eternal. Her death caused sorrow to all who knew her, and her christian life was an example to all. Her life was one of unselfishness. We feel assured that her heavenly Father had a place in His Kingdom for her, and chose her as one of his jewels for the everlasting home. She has gone to the fair land of rest and sunshine, where with unclouded vision she has seen the "King in His beauty" and will be walking and watching to welcome her loved ones home. "Like the bloom of midnight darkness Comes this shadow to our hearts, When with this precious, cherished loved one, We are called upon to part. Dark the wav and deep the shadow 3f the path that leads ahead, When we know that happy Mamie ^ow is numbered with the dead. No, not dead, but with the sleepers, Sweetly resting for awhile, )nlv waiting for her loved ones, \.nd her savior's blessed smile. Courage then dear faltering loved ones, Wait a while and you will know rhat God took her home to heaven ust because He loved her so We will see her at the Judgement, lobed in an angels radiant gown n her hand, a harp of glory, )n her head, a golden crown.
