A CALL FOR HELP
The recent floods in the river
valleys of North and South Carolina
destroyed hundreds of
homes and devastated thousands
of acres of farmlands, thus rendering:
homeless and destitute
many, many people. In the
mountainous sections the people
lived principally in the valleys.
Now their homes and
crops, and in many instances 1
the soil itself, are g:one. The
railroad service has been greatly
crippled, and the roads are wash
ed away in many places and
buried by landslides in others.
The people in many sections
have been 'reduced to actual

may starve before aid can reach
them Relief committees have
been named, and the people are
responding noblv to this call of
these distressed ones. There is
little chance that the fund will
grow too large, however. This
is a splendid opportunity for the
people in this section to render
aid to their fellowmen of another
section who have suffered
incomparably more from the recent
disasters.
This paper will be pleased to
receive and forward any
amounts, large or small. If vou
are sure you will never be in
need, you may be excused.

In the year 1914 one automobile
was made in the United
States for every 200 persons.
