Col. Ashley, adjuster for the \
only fire insurance compny now
doing business in Pageland, was 1
here Friday and Saturday adjust '
ing certain losses and looking
over risks which his company
had here. The opinion had
been expressed that this compa 1
nv would withdraw also but he
stated that this action would not 1
be taken at this time, but ex- '
pressed the opinion that some
of the property valuations
should be lowered, and that policies
on all buildings with brick
on-edge flues would be canceled
unless the .flues are rebuilt at
once. 1
THE MORNING TRAIN
Two or three years ago when
there was popular demand for a
train leaving Pageland at 6 or 7
o'clock in the morning this paper
was active in securing the railroad
commission's cooperation
in the requests for this change of
schedule on the C. & L. road.
The persistence of the demands
caused the train to be run for a
while. Later the railroad showed
to the commissioners that the
train was being operated at a
loss, and a contract was signed
that a morning train should be
run from Pageland to Cheraw
each day the county court should
be in session and on the first
Monday of each month.
Conditions have changed.
During the time that has elapsed
hundreds of automobiles have
been purchased, and the people
do not ride on the train. The
_??aEfi._-foi_autQ_ride^b as^v^
brought down to about thep^S"
of a ticket. During the two
weeks of court in April the pas
senger business done by this
train amounted to about twenty
dollars a week. The passenger
business done by this train has
not paid expenses but once or
twice since it was put on.
Much improvement has been 5
made in the roadbed during the ^
past fifteen months. It is esti (
mated that more than eighteen 1
thousand dollars has been spent 5
on the roadbed alone during this k
time. The Ruby section which J
was in very poor condition has 1
been put in fine shape. The 5
road from Pageland to Croburk 1
was in such bad shape that *
about three hours were required (
to run the train these eight miles, 1
and then it would get on the '
ground almost every time the 1
trip was undertaken. The trip
is now made when necessary in f
about an hour without any s
jumping the track. The freight 1
train used to stay off the track *
about half the time during the 1
fertilizer season. During the season
just closing it has been
off the the track but once, we
belive, and tbnt tim^ because a c
switch split. i
The management has shown a f
willingness to accommodate the
people during these fifteen
months, and the people's inter
ests have been given consider- '
ation.
In view of the above facts, we [
are in favor of releasing the rail
road from the agreement to run '
the train couit weeks and first
Mondays. The people have not f
given the road the passenger 1
business implied in the contract. 1
The road should be released. 1
