BUTTER BY PARCEL POST
Mrs. J. Z. Green, of Marshville,
who is looking after the selling
v of butter direct from producers
in her section to consumers in
other parts of the State by parcel
post, has agreed * to come to
Pageland and tell how it is profitably
done if a meeting of interested
Tarmers and their wives
can be secured at an early date.
Is there interest in the matter?
THE THREE-SIDED CASE
Coun was the topic of conversation
throughout the county
last week, and the progress of
this important case was observed
with the keenest interest. Most
cases have just two sides. This
one had three. The lawyers and
the judge acknowledged that
this was the first case of its kind
they had ever had occasion to
engage in. Fiftv-nine witnesses
were examined, which was less
than half the number summoned,
and the evidence would fill a
.volume or two. As was to have
been expected, few were able to
agree as to the details. The
cost of this trial was well above
the seven hundred mark, and the
county is the looser. As we un
derstand the matter, the trouble
did not begin here at the trial
last March, but months and years
before in petty neighborhood
wrangles and annoyances. How
pitifully insignificant these
worthless rontonlinns must an.
pear when viewed in the light
of the awful results!
While the verdict was ligher
jjB^^Bifi-we^Tpecfed, w-hope it is for
the best. The jury, we be- ,
lieve, did what seemed best after
hearing the evidence. We hope
there will not be at any time in
the future a renewal of the feud,
but a better understanding of
each other and peace and good
will among all the parties concerned.
THE NEW INSURANCE LAW
The anti compact bill, known
as me l^aney-Udom bill, which
passed the legislature a short
time before the close of the session
was signed one day recently
by Governor Manning, thus
becoming a law. This law
drives out the Southeastern Underwriters
association from the
State, and opens the doors to
competition between fire insurance
companies doing business
in the State. T he association
named above was considered a
trust foi making the fir6 insurance
rates in South Carolina.
it is argued by some that this
competition will cause rates to
be lower; by others higher.
Many of the companies are giving
notice of withdrawal from
the State. It remains to be seen
yet how the new law will work.
The opinion of this writer is,
however, that, barring a temporary
derangement of the business,
the law will prove a benefit to
the people. Perhaps this view
was strengthened by the announcement
that about a dozen
fat job holders were thrown out

Perhaps Mr. W. P. Odom deserves
more credit for discredit)
for the passage of this bill than
any other man. An effort was
made in the house to filibuster
the thing to death, hut Mr.
Odom, as chairman of the agri- 1
cultural committee, marshalled '
his forces and prepared to stay 1
the thing out if it lasted a week
