Tiie Pageland Journal Published Wednesday Mornings C. M. Tucker, Proprietor Subscription Price - - $1.00 Entered as second-class mail matter at the post otfice at Pageland, S. C., under Postal Act of March 3, 1879. February 23, 1916 The 2 quart liquor law recently passed by the legislature cuts the amount of liquor one man may order in a month in half. Not one gallon, but just 2-qq^rts. And gang the fellow who sells a drop within the state. Truly these laws have "teeth" and it is now up to the people to see that the laws are enforced. Union county, N. C. is taking advantage of the opportunities afforded by the parcel post system as few counties are, we be lieve. Butter, eggs, etc. are shipDed direct from the farm tr? the consumer in the eastern part of the State or Virginia. The rural carriers collect the parcels right from the farms, and the expense is light enough to leave a nice margin of profit above what could be secured for the same goods on the local markets. The Gilboa section seems to be ahead in this work, but other sections are following her lead. In another column in this issue is au article telling where and how to secure information about parcel post marketing. We hope a great number of our readers will seize this opportu* nity to get this helpful information the government is sending out. There are hundreds of families in distant localities that would be only to glad to secure pro duce fresh from the farms of our readers at a price much higher than it is possible to secure on the local markets. We hope our ,farmer readers will ^^^Ju^tfje^time to lottk into this tages are offered. ~ The parcel post is the farmer's friend, and he has yet to learn the many ways in which it can help him. Suggestions That Rfay Be of More or Less Interest to the Modern Cook. The New York Sun gives the following amusing receipt to illustrate how popular talking-machine records may be utilized in correctly timing all culinary operations, while at the same time adding pleasure to labor: German Coffee Cake?Set the instrument going, and cream one fourth of a cupful of butter, threefourths of a cupful of sugar and a pinch of salt while the instrument is rendering Siegmund's song from "Die Walkure;" add one-half of a cupful of flour and a teaspoonful of baking powder. Work to a smooth consistency during the playing of thf> "Tannhauser" overture. This will last just long enough to get the mixture ready to be poured into the baking pan. Put into a quick oven and bake as long as it takes Gadski to sing "Mild und Leise" from "Tristan und Isolde/' Italian Curry of Mushrooms?Stir one can of button mushrooms as long as it takes Caruso to sing the "Lament" from "I Pagliacci." Add a tablespoonful of butter and curry powder, and boil slowly while the sextet from "Lucia" is being sung. That will brinor if lin tn n hpntir?cr r> -- ?r ? ~ ? -. consistency. Add a cupful of cream at the Inst note, and bent in strict time fintil Tetrazzini has finished singing "Ah, fors' e lui." Serve with spaghetti. French Rabbit?Put a record of a Farrar singing the "Carmen" "Habanera" on the instrument, and at the first note begin heating one-third of a cupful of milk. Remove at the hist note. Stir in the finely chopped Gruyere or Parmesan cheese, salt and cayenne. Stir briskly to the enthusiastic strains of the Metropolitan singers doing the "Soldiers' Chorus" from "Faust." Then add the yolks of two eggs and cook as long as it takes Ysaye to plav the "Meditation" in "Thais." Serve hot to the singing of Segurola's air from "Mephisto."?Youth's Companion. SHE KNEW PAPA "Well, now, what does your papa do?" "Oh! whatever mamma says." SAME OLD TROUBLE. "Darling," said the melancholy wife, "if you should die first, you'll wait for me on the other shore, won't you ?" "Oh, 1 suppose so," rejoined the wearv husband, "I've always had to wait for you every time we went anywhere." A REAL SURPRISE. "I was much impressed by Professor Diggers' discourse on Egyptology-" "What seemed to strike you most forcibly." "The fact that I expected to fall asleep and didn't." ITS NATURE. "Do you think a telephone opera tor could look on-his business as a profession ?" "Well, it certainly is a colling." TAKING BOTH. "Take my advice, boy, and see the girl you mnrrv is a good plain cook." "But why couldn't I marry a good pretty one, dad ?" HIS DREADFUL CONDITION. "IIow's the patient this morning?"
