The Pageland Journal Published Wednesday Mornings C. M. Tucker, Proprietor Subscription Price - - $1.00 Entered as second-class mail matter at the post office at Pageland, S. C., under Postal Act of March 3,^879. December 22. 1915 This is the season when we all want to be happy. Pleasure is the thing we seek, various and sundry attempts are made to | onng joy ana guaness into our own lives and into those about us. The most infamous and ridiculous of all these attempts is to tank up on pop-skull liquor. For each thrill of real happiness brought bv alcohol - there are a thousand pangs of sorrow. The man who loves or respects his wife, mother, sister, or sweet heart should stop and consider possible results of his Christmas spree. Many a man would gladlv give everything to be able to start back at the beginning with the experience he has bought so dearly. Then the God who made man in His own image has an indisputable right to the minds and i: ~ e .1 - ' iivus ui i ne creaiurcs 01 his hand, which He cannot use when filled with hellisn, soulkilling liquors. You call it christ mas, but work overtime in aiding the devil to destroy your manhood and your soul. Christ mas, indeed! You utter the word with a breath from hell. The devil has you blindfolded and is leading you straight to destruct ion. He is also using you to pull down the lives of ycur comrades and associates. For the service you are rendering you are to reap a reward of sorrow and endless woe. Resolve now to be a man. r?? ?14 ? ylva?(U>U- t 3? /ftII hidden avv*ay. Come out and take a stand against the stuff that is pulling you down. ^ ^ Representative Rivers states that the people who are kicking like steers at the high taxes, should take time to look into the tax levy and see just how much tax they are paying and where it goes. He cites Ruby, Mt. Croghan and Pageland school districts as examples of hightaxed districts where half and more of the total levy is for local schools. By reference to the tax notice in this paper it may be seen that the ordinary state and county tax is 14 1.-2 mills, which as we all know is based on an assessment of property at onethird or less of its actual value. In Ruby district the total school levy is 17 1-2 mills, or 3 mills more than the state and county. In Mt. Croghan the levy is even 17 mills, and in Pageland 14 mills. This school tax comes right back to the district in which \ \ PAGEI it is paid and is used by the I schools right at the doors of the persons who pay the tax Mr. Rivers does not wish to be *understood as opposing local school tax, but on the other hand he is highly in favor of it. He just wants the people to under- ? stand why taxes are higher than * in the davs when there were no v local school taxes. The people have voted the tax, and should w not blame the county officials for acts of their own. q Where is the man w ho would r, cripple the school at either of the above named places because of the extra tax? Most of us, M when we think aright, take pride in the fact that we are S Helping to run these schools and si educate the boys and girls who so quickly become men and women. * WKah rKri.? n-ii. t( Christmas has called? and I \t want to go home; Christmas has whispered?and p out through the night There's something that beckons to us who must roam v Far from the berries of scarlet d and white; There's something that beckons fj ?and out oh the road h We follow the way of a dream that is old, ^ And weary the traveler and _ heavy the load Of those who may never turn back to the fold. 1 Christmas has called and 1 want I to go back?
