The fourth of July falls upon
Sunday this year. The celebration
at Monroe will be held .on
Monday the 5th.
Mr. Robt. Vick, who underwent
an operation for appendicitis
in a Charlotte hospital
* several days ago is said to be
doing nicely now.
A 1-day old infant of Mr. and
Mrs. V. F. Graves, of the Jeiferson
section, died Sunday and
was buried at Fork Creek Mon
day about 10 o'clock.
' Mr. J. W. Graves reports that
lie had beans from his garden
Sunday. Mr. A. F. Funderburk
reports that he had a large mess
Tuesday and that he will have
fresh coin from his garden by
next Saturday. Who can beat
these gardeners?
Lightning struck a house on
Mr. Philip Sellers' farm near
Ruby Monday night during the
storm and set it on fire. The
roof was badly burned, but the
fire was extinguished before
the house was destroyed. No
one lived in the house^

Mr. Percy Rivers and Miss
Ida Therrell, daughter of Mr.

in marriage last Sunday afternoon,
Mr, W. J. Odom being the
officiating notary, says the
Chesterfield Advertiser.
Mr. Maston Gardner, the
young man who had a leg
broken when his father's boiler
exploded last Wednesday, was
. carried to a hospital in Charlotte
/ Saturday because he was threat
coed with blood poison. He^is

have to be amputated or not.
Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Baker, of
Canes Creek township, returned
Wednesday from Douglass, Ga.,

death of their grandson, Emmett
Carelock, the f> year-old son of
Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Carelock,
formerly of Lanes Creek township.
The little fellow died from
blood poisoning which came
from a disease of the gums.
In another column is an ad
vertisement of an employment
bureau for Pageland. This is a
new venture and it rests with the
people as to whether it shall sue
ceed Or fail. It is simply a plan
by which the employer and the
laborer may be brought together.
Many times laborers are idle
because it is nolknown that they
-would work, and many times
employment is waiting for
laborers. We shall watch the
progress of this venture with
interest.
A rural route from Patrick
will be established June 16th.
The route is 21 miles lorn* nnd
the earner will make on.y three
trips a week, for which he will
be paid $572 a year. This will
be the third route from Patrick.
The carrier will be appointed
from the list of ehgibles created
by the examination held at
Chesterfield September 26, 1911.
The three highest on this list at
present are as follows: J. A.

The small child of Mr. and
Mrs. R. II. Nelson is very sick.
H. B So well deserves
credit for the good work he docs
on his side walks and in cleaning
up at the rear of the storerooms
over whick he has control.
He does more work than
any other property owner and
he deserves praise for it. All
other propert>- owners in town
should be asked to do likewise.
Then, those who fail to do so
should be forced.

Heavy rains have visited
many sections during the past
week, and land in some places
has been washed. There w as a
heavy rain and wind storm in
this section Monday night, accompanied
bv much electricity.
The hcaviestjpart of the cloud
seemed to be northeast of Pageland.
In the mills section on
Brown creek the rain was
particularly heavy. There was

any damage of any consequence.

Richmond and Moore counties,
N. C. last week.
Mrs. H. Laney left yesterday
to be with hef sister, Mrs.
Mangum of Chesterfield who is
very sick.
Mr. Recce Funderburk returned
from the University ol
Maryland, Baltimore, Saturday.
Mrs. H. N. Askins, and Mrs.
Dr. Duncan leave today to be
gone several weeks, visiting
relatives in Greenville, Anderson,*and
Lancaster.
Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Lingle and
family of Monroe, and Mr. and
Mrs. Ben Lingle and family of
Charlotte spent Sunday with Mr.
and Mrs. Van Mungo.

Croghan, is visiting her sister
