. - 1 The Pageland Journal Published Wednesday Mornings C. M. Tucker, Proprietor Subscription Price - - $1.00 i Entered as second class mail matter at the po.st otlicc at Page land, S. ( ., under Postal Act of March 3, 1870. March 10, 1915 If your town isn't good enough for an occasional boost, move. Health, happiness, education, religion, morality?nil will feel the quickening influence of Good Roads. We hale to tell you, but if you are opposed to better roads you are living in the wrong age. You should have livedo when people went a foot or on a camel. t -COThe roads \viil be in good condition by the time the bond election is held in "May and so many of us will forget about what the conditions were in January. Do you think a "gallon a month" will b?? ??nr?ii?rh fice? Be careful w all the dales and amounts, for jitter Ididay you will he limIt.odNto one puny gallon for each 30 da\s, and the days .are growing longer jind longer. Permanent roads can never he huilt hy taxes lev ied and collected before the \\ork is done. It would take about -J5 years to raise enough money to do a good job of road building in any township. By that time the present generation would he either dead or disheartened. By issuing bonds the road> may he made this year, and we pay for them as we reap the benefits in the years to come ~ 1 Count tlie cost of hauling and driving'you do in tw^WWfionths at the price you would charge anyone else. Then estimate the cost of the same woik 011 good level, hard roads. Subtract one from the other. What will your extra tax be at a fcwjnills on llie dollar valuation? Will good roads pay YOU? Then estimate the increase in the value of jour propcity a good hard road would bring. Can you afford to vote against the bonds? The suggestions of an "Interested Citizen" in regard to com pulsory School 'attendance in Pageland school district a're timely, and we call attention to them in the hope that action may he taken it once. Compulsory attendance will not work a hardship on any one, lor ample provisions have been made for excuses in case of necessity. Phis law is needed in the rural schools as well and we hope to see a movement started throughout the county to put this law into effect in the various districts. The war is about so, so. The The Russians claim to -be regaining lost ground; the French and English are shooting and being shot at in the western theater, and Greece is about ready to enter the fight. The Russian fleet and hundreds of merchant vessels are bottled up in the Black sea by the Turkish forts along the Dardanelles and Bospborus straights, which form the only outlet. I he fleets of the Allies have been flattering away at the forts on the Dardanelles, the outer of the two straits, for several days. Millions of bushels of wheat are ready to be shipped out to the world as soon as these strong forts can be shot to pieces and ddc ? waterway opened to the pierrhant vessel* of the world. . * - * Aa . .. ?r- y The Mexican situation looms up again. Conditions in Mexico have gone from had to worse. < The officials 'of Ihe United States government have shown ! \ the patience of -Job in dealing ] ! with this turbulent country, and | every effort has been made to 1 avoid armed hostilities. The ] rights of foreigners have been ( disregarded an I our government i /has sent a note to the Carr.u./a* forces that a change must i e | made. The note is expressed in no uncertain terms and it is considered the strongest document of its bind that has been passed between the two govern- 1 ments since the messages to Iluerta about a year aa< .
