The bill abolishing the office
of constable in Chesterfield
county has been discussed very
generally during the past ten
cloys, and there are speakers on
each side vet. The writer has
been unable up to this time to
get a copy of the >il! and lie is
therefore ignorant as to the do
tails of the plan. From the best
information at hand, however, it
seems that one more rural policeman
is to be employed, making
n total r.f four for the county,
and each is to serve approximately
two of tbf' eight townshins
in civil and criminal luisi
ness.
Under the old system, there
was a constable in each township
and he was paid a salary
out of the funds o1' the county
treasury ranging from one bund-1
red and fifty dollars up to possi |
blv three hundred tor criminal
work alone. Fe s were charged
for all civil work and the fees
were retained hy the constable.

criminal work exclusively. It
may readily he v- en that the expense

work done.
The county lias been in debt
and is still so. There is rarely
enough money in the treasury to
meet expenses. The representa
tives in the legislature realize
this and they have worked out a
plan to cut expenses, as they see
it, and for their kihor they are
receiving much averse criticism.
Naturally those directly affected
by the abolition of the office fail
to see -vrhat kimi reasoning
brought forth such :i bill, and
many others agree that the plan
is unsound and that it will be
very unsatisfactory. The chief
objection to the plan is that the
rural policemen can not cover
the territory in a satisfactory
manner.
Then on the other side there
arc those who see in it a saving
to the county of about $-,000
annually. Thev snv the nav of
the rural policemen will remain
the same and that nearly all that
has heretofore been paid as
salaries to constables will be
saved. They argue that the
rural policemen can do all or
nearly all the criminal work and
the greater part of the civil, and
that if a deputy does part of the
civil business nothing is lost for
in all civil business a fee is
charged and the officer who
serves the paper collects from
the party or parties to the suit

will he better than the old one,
under which two officers were
paid for the same \vt rk, but lie
is of the opinion that constables]
under strict rules would have

public.
However, we are ready to accept
the law, for such it is, and
give it a fair trial. We are not
hostile to it, nor do we believe
anv selfish motive is behind it.
We shall he pleased to see it
succeed.
Wait and See
There is no possible way of
determining the sex of eggs.

egg contains a rooster or a pullet
is to hatch the egg under a
hen and watch the chick for
nearly a year. If it crows'it is
a rooster; if it lays egg's it is a

Recently the Progressive debating
club was organized with
the following officers:
Pres. Burrus3 Edgeworth; Vice
Pros Lee Sanders; Secretary,
Nellie Mangum; Critic, Ruth
Chavis; Treas., Wincie Mangum.
The purpose of the organization
is to train its members in
debate and declamation, and to
keep them informed on current
events.
The program given in the
school auditorium Friday afternoon
was a good one and was
attended by the pupils and teach
ers from the other grades. Following^vvere

Switch, Jeff Turner.
Current events: Maud Sanders.

Netta Clark.

letter to Philadelphia:

yesterday at noon. Mr. R. S.

The first and only bid put
on the great big building was $5
and Mr. W. L Rose was the bidder.
The building and fixtures
were knocked down to him and
he immediately signed the
papers. It is a part of the contract
