Lawyers in South Carolina j
and in Chesterfield county, as in
other states and counties, con- j
stitute less than half of one per (
cent, of the male population, but
the law making bodies are com- f
posed largely of lawyers. Not
all lawyers are legislators, but (
the per cent, as composed with v
other classes and professions, is j
too l^rge. Lawyers are all ri^ht ,
in their place, and they are nice '
and handy to have in the community,
but they should not try ,
to sit in all the seats prepared f.r j
the representatives of all the t
people. They have only the j
lawyer's point of view and the *

lic matters. Consequently when
they are in the majority legislation
of particular interest to farmers
and other working men
suffers in many instances for
lack of a champion. It is but
natural that important measures,
like the Torrens system of registering
land titles, which tend to
hurt the lawyer's business should
be left behind by legislators who
are largely lawyers. The farmers
are entitled to a larger rep
resentation in our law making
bodies, and we hope to see more
candidates from the farms enter
the race this year. Lawyers are
better fitted for this kind of
work than any others perhaps
owing to their knowledge of the
law, and we are willing to see a
larger per cent of their number
in the legislative halls than of
any other profession, but we are <
not willing that they should
have a majority. This very (
small part Qjf the population-has (
had control long enough and it (
is time for other professions to (
assert their rights and elect men .
from their own ranks to theTeg- ^
islatures of the various states.
We have no prejudice against
the lawyers, for we love their
sweet souls; we protest just as
we would if the farmers had control
of everything. We desire ?
that all classes be represented in (
the meetings that make the rules j
for all of us to live by.

County
Monroe Enquirer
The county commissioners at d
their regular monthly meeting j *
passed an order abolishing \s
the office of county treasurer.
By an act of the last Legislature
the board of county commissioners
of this county and
thirteen other counties were em-1c
powered, in their discretion, to (
abolish the office of county 1
treasurer and in lieu thereof to <
appoint one or more solvent 1
banks or trust companies in the f
county as financial agent for the j
county, the bank or trust com-1
pany to perform the duties now .
performed by the county treasurer.
It is provided in the act'
that the bank or trust company
acting as financial agent for the
county shall not charge or re- *
ceive any compensation for its ]
services, other than the advan- ^
tages that may accrue from
keeping the county funds. The ^
office of treasurer will not he

abolished, however, until the ex- ^
piration of the term of Mr. J. W. ^
Laney, the present treasurer, on
m
the first Monday in December,
1914. The commissioners did I
not appoint any bank as keeper
of the county funds, that matter
being left open. o

Cold Comfort
There is a certain hotel up in
British Columbia that has a repitation
for being reasonably
old. It is a frame structure
ind the walls are thin and shaky.
)ne morning during a blizzard
wo guests who had been there
he night before came out of
heir rooms, on opposite sides of
he hall' The first man said:
"Whew! I'm jiearly frozen! I
lever was so cold in my life. I j
ilept with all my clothes on and
jverything else piled on me, and
I'm frosted through!"
"Same Here," said the other.
I was on the windward side of
his hut. I put on my buffalo
:oat over my clothes, and I don't
hink/^'ll ever get warm!"
They went down to the hotel
dffice. There, huddled over the
itove, was a stage driver who
lad lost his way and been out
ill night. His hair and whiskers
>vere lumps of ice. His fur hat
vas frozen to his head. He
shivered and shook with the
:old, though he was practically
sitting on the stove. The two
juests looked at him for a minlte.
Then one of them ask^ I.
"Which room did vou have,
partner?"
Walter McQueen, a person of
:olor, faced Justice Howard in
he police court at Jackson,
Tennessee, the charge against
dim being assault and battery on
[he person of Lily Belle Hopper.
In addition to the battered complainant
three of her friends appeared
as witnesses against him.
The clerk read the warrant,
beginning: "City of Jackson,
Tennessee, against Walter Mcr\
