We live beyond our means ; un

In compliance with your request
to give a statteiment as to the con
dition of affairs existing between
thle whitesm and blacks onl election
day, I have t state that I was in
the vicinity of the polls during the
greater part of the d ty, and observ1
ed no signs of intimidation of the
blacks, or of interference in any
way whatever with them by the
whites. Tihe utmost quiet prevailed
during the entire day. Thle oily
signs of a dlisturbanIce duaring the
dlay wals in the secreting of arms of
ini a vacant house by a body of
negroes. but prompt mneasures were
takenl to pr'otect the~ citizens and the
town inl case the armsn wereo taken
out bly the negr(oes. They were
removed from the house as~ qJuietly
ats possible by thme owners after
night -fall
The good order that jIwevailed is
due to the thcioogh system adopted
by3 the~ wjuites, of conduttlig' the
election.
Very r'espectfully,
Your obedient servant,
