Richmond, under tike direction of Mr. James
\Varrcll, an artist of some eminence, from a per
' sonul acquaintance with the superior talent* and
enterprising genius of whom, wc anticipate with
no less confidence than satisfaction the speedy
accomplishment of an object which will add one
more ornament to that beautiful city, and do ho
nor to the liberal polloy of our sister State.?
The Legislature of Virginia hns encouraged

Square?-If the munificence of tho citizens bo

An important question was lately decided by
the District Court of Pennsylvania Involved in
several actions bro't by tlio U. 8. against the
distillers of Lancaster county, for withholding
payment of ther duties as claimed by the United
States. The ground taken was that the distil
ler is not liable to pay duty on the quantity of
spirituous liquors he distills and sells, but on
the portion of alcohol or deptegmated spirits
contained in that quantity of liquor, separating
the water from the alcohol and excludihg all but
the pure spirit from the account in estimating
the duties to be paidw*?After considerable pro*
gross had been made In one'of the cases, in con*
?eque^iceof iih intimation'from the judge that
the defendants' ground was untenable, they very
properly abandoned it* without further effort to
withhold payment of the duties.
His Excellency, Mr. Pedcrsen, envoy extra,
ordinary from the government of Denmark to the
United States, has, among his other important
functions, interested himself in establishing a
proper understanding between tho literary and
scientific characters of die two countries. In
Now-York,the honorable efforts of this gentle*
man have been aided by James B. Murray, Esq.
Dr. Mitchell, and Mr. Hammeken, the consul
general. A ship which lately sailed for Blsineur
and Copenhagen carried with her, consigned to
the particular care of the captain, the despatches
destined to open this amicable intercourse. They
aro more particularly addressed to the Royal A.

Medicine, patronized by his Danish Majesty.
The ship Belle, lately arrived at New-York,
brought a select and splendid suite of Mineral
Specimens front Klba. They consist of the chiil -

of that famoua Island. This littlo cabinet was
received from one of Bonaparte's officers, by
CtoriictiilsC. V sn Allen, esq. at Nice, and
' warded to Dr. Pu/caliH, who has presented them

The Merchant's Bank of Alexandria hove
come to a resolution to close the concerns of that
. Institution, and a committee of three, of their

trict. It has been stated in the public prints in
tltts states, that by a lato Treaty with the Chero
kee Indians* we liavo obtained all tho lands
within the chartered limit* of the state, thereby
that we have acquired upwards of 500,000 acres
of excellent land. I was born and raised in this
District, and though a very poor man, there is
not 4 tracts of 1000 acres each, that I would own
and be compelled to live on, for cither of them i
the whole does i* jt exceed 1.10,000 ucrcs, and I
think it far less?moat of it is barren mountains
which never can be cultivated?& the quantity &
value of the lands have been so much exaggera
ted l>y those who are favorable, froiu whatever

trict it is true, is very large, but the lauds are
very poor, and the population widely disncrsed.
It now holds an honorable rank, but a division
of it, in my opiuion, would be of more injury
than .eal benefit to tho citi/.ens of the present
district?When the Cherokee* do relinuuish all
claim to the lands lying in the chartered limits of
thisfttnte, there will bo a piece added which of
itself is nothing worth, but which will subsist
many of the poorer sort who live rather by hunt
ing (han labor, ami then and not till then ought
