SaarnalICourier, of he 17th inst sayst A case was tried, during the re cent sessin of the U. S. Circuit Court in tfins ity, which ought to be general I' Unorst6od, both by the people and th officials who have charge of the v,arious Post Offices -throughout the country;. The Postmaster at Sylva nia, in Seiiven county was arraigned and 'fined fifty dollars, for delaying letters In his office. The law makes it the imperative duty of every Postmaster to forward all nil' m'atter deposited one half hour beforede departure of the mail, un. a lon ei timo should be granted by the ostmaster Geieri, on ae eeunt orthe business of the office. ThMor are also sovere penalties for delaying letters, papers, &c., after they have been mailed and on their way to iheir places of destination. So stringent are the laws, that a rigid and prompt discharge of their official duties only can save the Postmasters from their penalties. The above is the first instance of a conviction that we have heard of, and we publish it for public information, hoping that it may lead to increased carefulness on the part of all who have anything to do with the Mail service. Al few more convictions of the kind, we have no doubt, will awaken the parties interested to a sense of their obligations, and do something to rem edy'the present irregularities of the mails. ..Educated Wheat.-A singular dis covery has been made in France, by a 'M,-Fabre, a humble gardener of Ayde, but of some local note as a botanist. The herb wgifope, .keretofore consider ed as worse than useless, grows abun dantly on the shores of the Mediterra nean. It proceces a species of grain resembling wheat in form, but much smaller. In the year 1839, I. Fa bre, sowed a quantity of this grain, and he was struck by observing that -the produce of it seemed to bear a close affinity to wheat, That produce he sowed the next year, and the vield was still more like wheat. He went on sowing the yield in this way year, after year, and each year found a marked improvement in the produce, tntil at last he had the satisfaction of getting as fine a crop of wheat, and of as good quality as could wish to be seen. At first ie produced his crops in a garden, but his latter sowings were made broadest in an open field. Thus,-then, a wild and mischievous herb, which is particularly destructive to barley crops, can be educated into ,excellent wheat.-Literary Gazette. NEw PAINT FoR BRICK HOUSES. A correspondent of the Ohio Farmer T writes that he has used a cheap and very du-able paint for the outside of brick buildings, and which has stood the test several years, and looks now qjite as fresh as when first applied. - t Its. madenf Jimewash, with sulphate oine 44. -a fixing ingredient. Any r6quisit6 shadd is given by adding the colors- used by house painters. A 'clear and rich cream color may be ob tained by applying yellow chre to the common new b~rick; a livelier aud warmer shade will be added by a lit tle Venetian red. This paint is far cheaper thtan oil paint; costs but lit tle more than common whritewash:, and nothinig will remove it but the sever.. est friction.
