sIjall everi Lt.spon this soil.
But it is 611i ,thing, to defend our. homes
from invasion, at all hazards, and another to t
rush blindly to arms, without a definite aim p
and without calculating the cost, singly to
originate a war, against the opinions, the
wishes, and the avowed policy, of our best
friend:,, to waste our energies in a feeble, t
isolated, and spasanlic efiori, to cripple our I
resources, before they are needed, a war,
which, if it fails, in the main object, the un
ion of the slave States, can have none but a
disastrous eflet, upon the futurity of thea
South.

The Strength of the two Parties.
At an Carly hour on Monday latt, the usually
quiet streets of our village were alive with a
buny multitude of our citizens.
'1 hey had assembled here on that day
to range themselves under the lanner
of their respective parties. The number
of persons present was variously estiatied;
while soni stated that as many as .ixteen
hundred freemen were on tihe ground, others
ansetted that the number did not exceed thirteen
hundred.
The secessionists had caused their pavilion
to be erected on the court ounse squlare, and
their dining tables set out in the well shaded
yard of ir. Dotten, in front of the court lause.
rhe Secession Standard was stationed near the
pavilion, and on it was written, "Co-operation
f we can, Secession rather than Submission." e
The co-operation party had made their
n'luion or :t barbecue dinner in the grove e

A iuit ) ; 't ,. . .M., the co-ojperationists r
forsed in piroem n gara and marched in the
dureet.ion u the acau ny, preceded by a laner e
on wiich was printed in glaring capitals, "So

The procession was a long one, and as they
marched by ts, we adrnit that we for a tiane

co-operation party was the larger. Bnt after c
the noise had subsided andl proclanation was
made for the sccessionists to assemble, ani wie
observed launareis upon laundrels of trae r
resistance men falling into ranks antil noving
in procession around the square, the color again
revisited our cheeks; and when the procession
returned to the pavilion, and we saw that the
seats which had been pre tared for the, ac

There' is for Spain one single way to
reserve Cuba-not forever, but during
i the time that slavery will last in the

his emancipation is not easy; Cuba
is 430,000 slaves, 21)5,000 free colored,

though in a state to make a sacrifice of

pain could only give freedom to slaves
relying upon the free colored. 'T'his is

The d;sorders in this city on Thursday

ithout the blunders and exaggerations

In Charleston, for example, a despatch

sturbance, in which it is said:
"The Cuban liberators, mostly Vestern

The otlice attacked was La Union, not
a l'atria. The assailants were not Cu

arcely one of this class was recognized
