T1' frayt phsce I turned to was the famni record.-There It was stated, that tup * qggdaliley, he had been mar ried initiy.---. I had known Emi *-g when I wasn a young mn tory *ell, and had once thoug seriously of'offering myself to her ma~rrhige, I remembered her haapr pbirng face a ndl see med suddenly hefm'a tona of her merry lataghster. M'Po6r orentu ret' I sighed involut trilg, as a thought of her presert en 4tk crossed my mind-and then i sud' i~mtteelings I tumrned over na other leaf. There was the record the birth of her rouir children; the Ia had been made recently, and wasi the mother's hand. ,I never had, such strange feelinj de now came over me. I felt that hird no business with this book; but rmed to stiflle my feelings, and turne 4r *vdral loaves quicky.-As suffered my eyes to rest upon an open page, these words arrei~ted my attentiur "Wine rs a mocker, st rong drink raging, whoso ise deceived therebyi a wide,' .h wa,. j..., .the ... e: t .that ..,,, :V~ CIavoid, a'd so Ireferred to. another. p place. At sl last it biteth like it serpent, It stingeth C like an adder.' n I felt like throwing the book from me; il but once more I turned the leaves, and fi my eyes rested upon these words.... U "Woe unto him that giveth his o neighbor drink; that( puttest the bottle to nim and nakest him drink.' I closed the book suddenly, and n threw it down. Then, for iialf an h hour, I paced thie room backwurds and I forwards in a statu of mind I never c before experienced. I had become < painfully conscious of the direful evils i resulting from intemperance, and still I more painfully conscious, that I had been a willing instrument in the spread of these evils. I cannot tell you how t mtch I uflbred during that day and I night, nor describe the fearful conflict a that took place in my mind, between a selfish love of the gains of my calling, and the plain dictates of truth and hurmanity. It was about nine o'clock, I think, on the same evening, that I opened the Drunkard's Bible again, with a kind of despairing hope that I should meet there with something to direct me. I opened at the Psalms and it read two or three chapterv. As I read on, without finding anly thing directly to my eise, I felt nn increasing desire lt dont my calling, because it was injuriotis to my fellow.men. A ltier I had read the Bible, I retired to ted, but could not sleep. I am sure that diring that night I thought of every drunken man to whom I had sold a liquor, and of all their beggared families. In the brief sleep that I ob rs tained, I dreamed that I snw a long line of tottering drunkards, with their wives and children in rugs. And a loud voice said: id bW Ito htht1i lone this?' r The answer, in a still louder voice, directed I felt, to me, smoto upon my to car like a peal of thunder 'Thou art the man!' 3r Front this troubled slumber I woke 6r to sleep ino more that night. In the morming, the last and most powerful confict came. hie question to be de cided, was r. 'Shall I openi lly tavern. or at once albandon the dread ful traffic in liquid itpoisnt ti a11ppily, I decided never to put to noany mran's lips the cup of confusion. I My next step was to turn the spicket of every keg or barrel of spirits, wine, beer, or cider, and let the contents IIescape on the floor. Aly bottles and decanters were likewise emptied. Then I came and signed your Total Ahstitence Pledge; and what is better, never rested until I had persuaded the mrm. o Bible had bteer. of so nuph k . :o sign the Pledg hle.'ise. To SLEEP To DiE.-Never was there 1 more practical and terrible application of lainlet's nernnrable doubting questioning lil or death sohloquy than in the rase of the three negroes in Texas, two of whom -a man and his wife-were lately found by a return party of the Mexican Boundary Commission in a state of starvation, having killed and nearly devoured their comrade. T'he Lavaca paper says they had lived for many weeks on roots and such things a.s they couid pick up but tinally becoming FO nearly famished with hunger that one of tle nien proposed that they should cast lots to see which of the three should be killed nnd eaten by the others; but Ilenry would not agrue that his wife should cast lots, for if it should fall upon her to be killed he could not eat a mouthful of her. So the two mlen ngreed that the first one that got to sleep should be killed by the other. I Honry who had his wife to heilp him proved the tuost wakeful, and the other fell a victim to the demand of hunger. ANY, AND EVERY THING, A. J, & P. MOSES, lHaving received their FALL.
